We are an e-commerce company selling hot tubs, chemicals and accessories online and use both SEO and PPC to generate clicks and orders to our various websites.

We have an in-house, part-time lady looking after our Adwords account but our spend is increasing and we guess it's because she's not focussed on it full-time.

Question is what should we do - hire a consultancy that doesn't know our business and generates a whole load of PPC ads that are for completely the wrong market? If someone knows an outfit that might be up our street then please let me know!

Any other ideas gratefull received!

Thanks

The first thing to do is find out why your spend is increasing.

Without knowing that, you've no idea what the underlying problem is.

(And beware anyone trying to sell you their services that doesn't first look into/asks you about this.)

If the ad spend is increasing and your ROAS is static well yes you have an issue. I'm assuming you have been running your AdWords account for some time, if so you can start by running some useful comparison reports to look at CPCs, CTRs, Avg Pos and other metric differences. It's a good starting point and will shed some light on why the ad spend is increasing.

Are there any issues with your quality scores, are they mainly 7's & 10's?
What keyword match are you using? If you are using broad match are you consistently mining your search query data for negatives?
Have you changed any campaign settings recently? Increased geographic reach, ad scheduling, etc?

Question is what should we do - hire a consultancy that doesn't know our business and generates a whole load of PPC ads that are for completely the wrong market?

Any PPC consultant worth his/her salt will do several things to ensure this doesn't happen...

    1. Your AdWords (and Analytics) account will have accumulated a wealth of market insight. All this data can be mined to understand exactly what works and what converts.

    2. The best source of business insight is you. You know your business better than anyone so communication and education works both ways.

Some ideas for you, I hope that helps.
