Having issues getting a domain name with email access for decent price

Good morning from Cornwall

I am trying to buy a domain name which is cheap enough but when looking via the sites GoDaddy and 123 Reg they add on a silly amount just so I can use email.

For e.g. The domain I want is 15 pouind a year but then they want an extra 71.63 for one email account with 1gb storage

Is there a way to avoid this or use a site thats not trying to extort potential customers.

Register with 123reg and host elsewhere. Vidahost do a £29/year deal on cloud hosting. There are other providers with similar offers.

Vidahost's £29 pa hosting package comes with a free domain name so he might as well cut out the middle man.

Alternatively just buy the domain name and take advantage of their email forwarding facilities if no hosting is required

Nice one, Thankyou, basically I have a website from Weebly and its registered with a different domain name so I want to get the new company domain name registered with email use and just add it to weebly so my new wood fired pizza shows up not the BS that was there before.

Would that work ok, is it easy to do , I actually only want to do a 1 page site whereby my punters could order a few pizzas and pay for it online

Zoho mail offers a number of free accounts per domain for their e-mail hosting so if you're hosting your site elsewhere that might be a good option for you. Their new web client is WAYYYYY better than the standard stuff that gets shipped with most Cpanel hosts too (supports conversations and all that good Gmaily type stuff).

I can vouch for Zoho mail too. You can get a domain from godaddy for 2 years under a tenner (look out for coupons), then point your mail at the zoho servers, its totally free (up to 10 email addresses I think). They also have a nice mobile app (only used the android version) to manage all your emails on the go, very handy!

Hi Jamie,

£15 for the domain sounds like a lot unless it's a less common extension. However 123-Reg are generally more expensive.

I'd echo the recommendation of just using a starter package with a decent web host.

For around £30 per year you can have a free domain and a few Gigabytes of email from a decent provider.

Or alternatively use the domain with a service like Zoho Mail or if you don't mind paying, Google Apps Mail - which is much more reliable, and arguably the best email you can get, so I'd say the better option over Zoho Mail if you're happy paying a few pounds per month for an email account. You then also get Google Docs, Drive and the other features as well which people often forget about.

You'll typically find web hosts will provide better value domain registration as it's often provided simply as a service to their clients rather than as a core way to make money.

If you do want to use a domain registrar rather than a web host though, then I'd recommend more ethical registrars such as Gandi.net and Internet.bs

Sadly GoDaddy and 123-Reg get recommended a lot because they're some of the biggest names, and it's not hard to provide domain registration, but the likes of Gandi.net and Internet.bs treat their customers better, operate more ethically and are also cheaper!

Firstly for email hosting stay away from godaddy and 123reg, you can read about their reviews. For email hosting the best one is google mail, you can check their cost.

Stay away from GoDaddy and similar companies, bloody awful to use.

I'm not sure how their current prices compare, but A Small Orange (asmallorange.com) are by far the best web hosting company I've ever used. Amazing service and reliability. I was told about them years ago by the owner of a large forum and never looked back.

£71.63 !!! you can get the full Google Apps (not just email) for £39.60 per year per user with 30GB storage.


Please be aware where you register your domain is completely separate from where you run your email and separate from where you host your website. Its just the likes of 123 prey on that lack of understanding and people's preference 'to buy all from one provider'
