Hardware upgrade

A friend is helping me upgrade my box for no particular reason other than I would like it to go faster - no gaming
We seem to have settled on an ASUS M5A78L motherboard with an AMD 8 core 4Ghz CPU and 8gb DDR3 RAM with a CPU heatsink and fan
Any thoughts?

No gaming? Slow with that spec? Maybe pop a SSD in and re-install or drop Windows. DDR4 and the latest/greatest isn't going to give you much latency improvement on non-intensive workloads.

You'll probably find you can buy a PC off the shelf that will out perform your current model cheaper than buying mainboard, CPU, RAM and having to fit then reinstall your OS.
Also, just my advice, but I find AMD processors to be a very poor investment.

My thoughts: you should upgrade 16GB RAM so you don't have to worry on this for two more years.

Thanks. That was suggested but I thought I'd only need that for gaming ....

As @PipeTen-Carl suggested - I would try installing an SSD first and see how you get on as this will improve boot times and access to applications massively.
