If the comment is useful then approve it. If it is spam then trash it.

If you don't want any comments you can turn them off. Go to Settings > Discussion and uncheck the various boxes.

There are no negative SEO implications for allowing good comments. Good comments can actually help your ranking as it can increase the keyword range on the page.

We use Disqus for comments which are approved automatically but we get a notification and if the comment looks spammy we just mark as spam.

Pretty sure there wouldn't be any SEO benefit to leaving spammy comments there.

As an aside, why do you use Disqus rather than the built in wordpress commenting?

Because our site isn't built on WordPress ;) But you're right that our CMS, Concrete5, does have in-built commenting. We just like the way Disqus comments work.

Discuss is good but, didn’t make it auto approve. Spam comments looks fishy, it’s bad for user experience. If you are still planning to use discuss make it manual approve.

I'd prefer to use the built in Wordpress comment system as there is a (debatable) small advantage when it comes to SEO.

Having said that, the main use of having comments on your site is to show genuine interactions between you and your customers. Therefore if you used a system like Disqus or livefyre that allows for people to log in via their social accounts you may find you have more success getting people to comment.

Blog commenting can increase your SEO rank, backlinks and traffic to your site BUT be sure to only approve comments that are rs elated to your business site. Trash away the spam, it won't do good in your business site. Quality over quantity. We don't want to get our business site/blog popular because of many spam.

Wrong. 99.9% of blog comments are no follow so have zero SEO value. Most of those that do have followed links are spammed to death. The remaining handful heavily moderate so the chances of your comment getting accepted are virtually nil.

The SEO value to the blog owner could be good if he heavily prunes posts. BUT, I wonder if continually adding content to a page would make it bounce up and down the SERPS [thinks: most pages comments die off naturally over time anyway]. Any blog I ever set up as a private person just attracted spam-bots.

The SEO value to the commenter, who is linking to his own site? Doubtful. If you're in a trade and you leave a truly helpful comment on a few related blogs it might help your marketing. At the mo', I wouldn't do it, personally, just for SEO. It feels really outdated and you could end up with 100's of weak, semi-sitewide links which could distort your link profile negatively.

    Just my 2p.

Comments have little if no value nowadays, as you won't be able to get away with a link to your site just by posting a comment even if it's relevant. The only way you can achieve this is by creating specific content that can add value to that specific article.

    You should focus on:
    - Produce quality, fresh, relevant content
    - Syndicate your content, for example via guest posts

Should you need further help just PM me.
