I only use google.co.uk and select uk only to buy stuff and all the web if I want information.

But I experiment with the settings and know all the searching tweaks so I'm probably not your average punter.

I usually use .co.uk but find that changing it to UK only doesn't always make that much difference so i only change it if it doesn't bring up the UKness I need as standard..

in fact Google annoys me sometimes by giving me geotargetted results even if I use .com and am looking for an American site...

if you type in google.com it will refer you always to .co.uk if you are surfing in the UK. You may also find that searches are different from one city to another as Google tailors results geographically now.

People in the UK will generally be defaulted to Google.co.uk, while those in the US will automatically be defaulted to .com. Each will try to give relevant search results, so ou will rank highly for one in the other.

If you are selling you have to decided whether you prefer to sell in the UK or the US. You can make your web site rank well for both search engines, but it takes a bit more work and time.
