Google Maps Charges

Now that google are charging for use of their maps, has anyone any experience of billing costs for sites that use multiple (say 200+) markers? Anybody been charged anything yet? Any good alternatives?

It says 25,000 free map loads per day. Doesn’t say anything about the number of markers.

I've found it pretty difficult to understand what will be chargeable and what won't. My understanding is that any access using an API key will be chargeable by each request (per marker?) and the free access up to a certain value will cease this year. I could easily be wrong though. I've seen messages from google appearing on local council websites (where a map is present), that ask if you're the site owner.

You get $200/month credit from Google. This credit offsets your usage costs. The cost per 1000 calls depends on how you use the maps. It's all explained here:

Looking at my stats I used around 5000 calls per month for the Static API so I pay nothing.

If you have 200 markers per map and there are 1000 map requests per month that's 200,000 calls which suggests you will be paying for everything over 100,000. If you look at your Google Cloud Console you will see your usage figures. It's possible they consider the 200 markers to be part of a single map load.

There is nothing about this on the official Google pages. And the free credit limit is $200 not $300 so the article is incorrect anyway.

Yeah I wonder where they got that from. It was the first article I read about it but having a look around now, I can find no other reference to it.

I don't use G maps anymore, does not offer anything extremely useful in comparison to free alternatives. Plus that thing with the API key really bugs me as I have to take upon myself the map management of everyone I've ever done a map for. Put them all together and very quickly I have to pay up. No thanks.

No you don't. You tell the client to get their own account.

Clients can barely remember their own password. I'm using Open Street Maps now
