I doubt there would be any legal basis for Google to release their algo.

I also do not think they would mess with their rankings with favourtism in mind.

You have to look at the wider Search Engine market to realise that there is a heck of alot going on in terms of competition. The next 2-4 years will determine if Google in deed REALLY will be at the top of the game as MS/BING/YAHOO plough unprecedented investment into there Global SE offering.

Additionally - there are / would be numerous people that would have awareness of the alogo and if information was ever to get out it would be absolute suicide for Google.

It just is not worth the risk.

Do any of you care who has the big market share?

I thought the goal of seo was to sit as high as you can in the search engines not just google alone.

Bing is becoming well known though, i have had more work come off bing than yahoo.

Me, too.

Also, if they have to disclose it, would that mean they have to keep dislosing it multiple times a day, as they tweak it?

Additionally - there are / would be numerous people that would have awareness of the alogo and if information was ever to get out it would be absolute suicide for Google.

I'm not so sure.

My guess would be that page 1 for most money terms is already dominated by those that have deliberately used SEO.

If everyone knew the algo, that would improve everyone's SEO ability, but so what?

It would bring people closer together, but the 10 pages that SEO the best are still going to be on page 1.

Plus, as I alluded to before, what stops Google from continuing to make changes and move the goalposts?

Unless Google release the algorithm for scrutiny they will never know anything. And if Google alter the position of NASDAQ that would surely constitute as evidence of the ability of Google to manipulate the indexes.
Yes they can delete, but I thought it was unethical for them to change positions as they see fit.

Did I forget to mention it? I have a full and complete set of Googles algo's. Didn't really think it would be worth anything to anyone though. Might just stick it on EBay and see if anyone bids.:D:D
