I own a small retro clothing store in Glasgow and was recently turned onto a website GlasgowBigAd by a friend, it offers very inexpensive advertising and promotional tools and i was wondering if any fellow small SMEs have had any success with such a site or if anyone had any advice on making the most of it.

P.S. I'm new to the site, so HIYA

Hello, and welcome to the site :)

Personaly I think these sort of Ad sites are pretty pointless. They don't come up for very relevant searches and the chance of someone being on it, making an impulse decision to buy some retro clothes is probably pretty small.

If they are confident that they can help you generate business then I would maybe ask for a 1 week trial period so that you can see for yourself if it is going to be a worthwhile purchase.

just my opinion

Without saying too much about that individual site, there's tons of similar ones out there and it will only work if it becomes popular locally.

Is it being promoted widely? Does the average Joe know about it? Is there anything there people can't find elsewhere? Is it worth £120 to have a four 10x10 pixel squares?

I think your money would be better spent elsewhere - Adwords or other PPC, print ads, flyers etc... can offer proven results. For example, we do opt-in marketing via SMS where you can build an opt-in database for nothing, advertise on our site for free and for the same £120 you could send well over 1000 messages out to people who are already interested in your business.

If you did want to go with the pixel site I'd wait till there was more traffic and more advertisers first.

Hope that helps - email me at [email protected] if you want as we work on promos for lots of independent retailers and could prob give u a few freebie ideas.

Ever since the milliondollarhomepage, there have been so many of these types of sites launched - the only problem I can see is that the original won due to the attention it got in the media, and all the subsequent efforts have attracted little or no interest in comparison.

It's a bit like that fella that sold his forehead on ebay, and managed to get something like $22,000 for a one-month temporary tattoo. He managed to get interviewed on TV, taking the logo with him, thereby making it worthwhile for the company that won the auction. In the following weeks, there were hundreds of copycats, some were even offering permanent tattoos - only problem was that it had already been done, and no-one was interested.

I think that Pixel advertising has had it's day. It was a gimmick, and to sell it as a serious alternative to reputable web directories and more traditional marketing techniques seems absurd to me.

But I might be wrong.

Hi Glasgow_Retro,

My financial services firm began advertising with GlasgowBigAd a couple of months ago, to be honest it now seems a bit rash but we did't look into the marketing of the site itself but as it was only costing around 30p per day we just jumped right in.

In the two months since we have gained 8 new customers and have already covered the cost of the advert.

So, I guess if you have the money, go for it, the sites offering some good deals and is has retained a successful Glasgow Ad agency to handle their PR so their attraction can only improve.
