I know its silly but there's a mental block with me getting a new idea up and running - the business name. I feel as though until i can get the right name I cant move forward - I mean, i do, but progress is so slow because this is on my mind that I need it.

Can anyone help come up with some ideas for a creative name for a virtual reality centred business please? I have had a few, left it a few days and when i go back to it i dont like it.

cheers guys

Why does it have to be creative?

Just call it abc vr and get on with the important stuff.

Whatever name you come up with you're going to hate it in a year's time anyway, so just pick something random like Apple... oh wait,, no Orance... now wait,, Rose. I'd call it that... no that's gay... ummm yeah, i can see your problem :-/ lol

As i say, its a mental thing with me now to the point where im thinking too much about a name. I must have gone through well over 100 in the last month and hate them all now. I think im dreaming too big and thinking how it will look once (if) ive grown

How far can you get without a name? In the past when I have developed apps or web sites I have left the name until the end and then used the inspiration of developing my idea to come up with a name.

Unless you are going to be marketing your idea from day one (unlike), then why not do the groundwork first and see if a name reveals itself?

Like @mattk says, don't worry about the name right now. Call it the name of your dog or your first school or just make something up. Nobody apart from you really cares. Just make sure it's generic so that you can grow the business into new areas.

Companies that are named after their founders, statistically do slightly better than those with made-up names. Those with very 'corporate-sounding' names do worst of all (anyone remember 'Consignia'?)

If your company is a facility (e.g. venue, video studio, recording studio, swimming bath) the location or the type of building tends to work well (The Factory, The Round-House, Abbey Road, Angel, Maidstone Studios).

Funky, off-the-wall names also do well (Google, Apple, Twitter).

Puns get you noticed, but tend to fail in the long run, as the joke wears off.

You can have a personal reason for a name, for example, many former Parachute Regiment soldiers have formed businesses with the name Pegasus in it and have dark (i.e. Airborne) red as their company colour.

So it seems to help if you have a personal and emotional reason for the name.

@wesaving are you building a website for your virtual reality centred business, does your business lead generation rely on ranking well organically in search engines?

If so, forget creative names or something you like the sound of. Look for a quality existing domain that's not expired, it should be related to your business/market with a decent link profile.

You can then name your business in a similar way to the purchased domain. If this process is done well, it can really speed up the ranking process in Google and Bing.

Make it generic - especially in the tech business - things change and your business opportunities change too quickly. I know as I went through 3 name changes in 5 years before deciding generic is best.

Make sure it is unique ( and ideally a trade-markable word in case your brand becomes worth protecting )

Hi, I don't know much about VR, so a little tricky to suggest names. VRAdventures // AllThingsVR // VRUniverse // TheVRZone // ZoneVR - tbh, I don't even know if any of these even reflect your business - so these may not be so appropriate or useful.

But I wonder if this helps...

I had a very similar experience when I was trying to set up a while back. It was a very unproductive MONTH!

Still unable to come up with a name that wasn't already taken - I thought enough is enough. I just made up my business cards under my own name and profession just to get me started. Met with the suppliers, attended trade shows etc, looked for premises without a confirmed business name just yet . The key words just emerged during the ground work (as mattk suggested above) that helped me come up with the business name in the end (two months later!).

I chose a name that reflected my profession (or the type of service/product you provide) then I made sure that the name wasn't trademarked by someone else. Finally, I also made sure that the domain name (both .co.uk and .com), Instagram and twitter handles were available.

Hope this helps. All the best with your new venture! :)

I agree , looking at competitors names will give you some ideas. If you are going to be doing a logo, business cards, website, marketing etc. it would be better to find the right name at the outset. Just keep at it. Think of a few names each day, search the internet, look around you for inspiration and if you keep at it an idea will suddenly materialise. You are going to feel a lot more positive with a name you think fits from day one.

Watch the movie Real Player One and you'll see that the place where virtual reality is played is named Oasis. It was name as such because the creator couldn't live a meaningful life in the real world and the Oasis served as an escape for him. Hence the meaning of the word -- a fertile or green area in an arid region (such as a desert). I would advise something similar to the term oasis. Something that relates to an "escape" or you could use ESC, a key on the computer keyboard.

For me the name gives the business life - something to focus your thoughts.

Easiest way to generate a name is to use a domain name generator - something like name mesh is useful - get the domain and namechk for your social handles.

Names beginning with A give you a natural advantage in directories which sort alphabetically.

If you are going limited I tend to pick something short for the ltd name and trade as whatever you want.

    xxxx ltd t/a the brand
