Hi, I am new to all this so please bear with me :)

How do people get their website on Google where they have the link to their homepage and below it they have links to their contact page, about us, etc. Does that make sense? Will this happen automatically once google have found my site or do I need to do it myself somehow?

Any help hugely appreciated as I cannot for the life of me find an answer for this.

These are site links and yes they are automatically served by Google based on what they think are relevant pages to display.

To get a degree of control sign up for Google Webmaster Tools and verify your site, there is a report for site links & you have the ability to demote ones you don't wish to be displayed > http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=47334

It all depends on the site, the products and a zillion other things.

I've had sites indexed and ranked in a day or two. A large ecommerce site with lots of competition could take months to get indexed and a year or two to rank well.

Firstly so not to complicate things you are asking about SEO - you are also asking in the wrong section look here instead.
As for getting your website to page one of Google if you read through you will find out what you need to do.
Search engine optimisation = SEO which is promoting your website to google spiders.
The site links are created by optimising internal links to pages with in your website.
But before you run you need to walk.
In my opinion is that you need help and if you can afford it hire an SEO.
