Freight Forwarding & UK Storage From China

Hi,

We have always used air for all our imports to date.

For the first time we are looking to bring a container in as it will be a bulky shipment - no idea of the dimensions and weight etc yet but it will definitely will either be a FCL or LCL.

I understand we need to get talking to freight specialists/forwarders but we are also looking for the consignment to be stored in the UK. We would then request partial shipment of the consignment when we require the stock.

Any recommendations on UK forwarders that can offer this for us?

One final assumption I want to check on is it about 4 weeks lead time from China to UK port?

Many thanks,
Steve :)

Yes approx 4 weeks on the sea. I`d count on 5 weeks by the time it reaches your warehouse.

A lot of forwarders have warehouse allocation too, just call a few. Especially for smaller amount like yours. I work with a decent forwarder with warehouse capacity, although they are based in Tamworth in the midlands if that is of any help?

Yes cargo has about a month sailing time from China and you need to allow a few extra days either side for customs clearance, inland movement etc.

As stated simply contact a freight forwarder to get you a rate through to door. Buy under FOB terms and you should more or less get a rate straight away.

Warehousing is no problem as we all can sort that out with very little difficulty.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your confirmation and suggestions. We will work on a 5 week lead time.

Will probably be in touch Power Forwarding shortly once I have some specifics about the proposed shipment. The goods probably will not set sail until end of the month/beginning of Oct, but I will be making first contact with potential suppliers tomorrow.

Thanks,
Steve :)

    Hello Steve,

couple of points that might possibly help.

If you are using a QC process in China, then I would say even 5 weeks is tight. The 4 weeks shipping is just that, from the day the ship leaves port to when it docks. Need to allow for the days between your goods being ready to ship and actually shipping. Then clearance at UK end.

Also, (I am sure Robert can help you with the freight and warehousing etc) you might find that the unit cost for freight in the UK is the most expensive part of the whole transit!

    Hi Graeme,

Thanks for the additional pointers. We have found a supplier and we probably should arrange QC but time is against so will have to take a bit of a chance. They are a very established company and seem to look okay to my trained eye so will probably just arrange shipping as they have a 25 lead time for manufacture also and we need them in the country by say mid-November at the latest.

    Hi Steve,

I can certainly recommend Power Forwarding as they manage all our UK Shipments & Robert has always been very helpful & highly efficient.

In terms of the QC, it shouldn't really add any more than 1 or 2 extra days to the process & can certainly help you minimize your risk substantially. For e.g. most pre-shipment inspections cann be completed within 1 working day.

    Hi,

Thanks for that. Will certainly bear you in mind for future shipments.
