Freelance writing rates

Ian, why do you ask?

If you'd like an average there really is no such thing in this particular business

Some cw's charge as much as £10,000 for a single sales letter

Others charge as little as £45

I am selling a sales letter template package on my website if you're hoping to save on cw fees?

Meanwhile

My rates and services are clearly detailed on my site

And the rest Leah. Guys like Ray Edwards want five times that and a percentage on top. Guys like Ted Nicholas wont generally work except for a percentage of a company!!

Coming back to the ordinary world,

As for how much - it depends very much on the job......
Also the rates for article writing tend to be way different from sales copy,

For example promotion of a course generally involves more than writing, like listenting to the entireity of the course creating a lot of blind bullets - and studying the competition - to come up with USPs and headlines can take a couple of days in itself.

The size of a sales letter will vary amongst other things according to the price bracket of the product , whether audio or video are included in the letter etc etc.

So I think the OP would do well to give an indication of the scope and scale of the job.. anticipated traffic sourcre and known conversion rates if any .to get more meaningful answers.

What i do is get a load of enquiries from a certain forum, then get them to write something to sort the good from bad. After that it does not really matter so much as I have a good idea about what I want written. If you are not creative, then you need someone to do this for you and you will probably pay extra and they can pull the wool over your eyes about "good copy"

My experience with paying more often disappoints because it does not differ from what I already got from someone cheaper. So I think it is a process of elimination to find the right person for the right price.

For boring product descriptions, I just use Indians at $4 a page and get them proof read by a native speaker.

Which is why I have taken sales copy off my menu for now, my teeny tiny rate no way covered the time I spend doing all those things.

I do a lot of research even when writing a single article or blog post and the sales copy research is mammoth. Small businesses can't easily afford to cover the rate for the hours involved (understandably) and I'm not sure they appreciate why it takes so long.

They afterall understand their market already and so perhaps can't see why someone else has to study it before being able to promote it.

I could be wrong there. I guess it's down to us to make it clear the processes involved.

I shall revisit sales copy in the future though.

For now, content writing is my passion and I'm sticking with that. :)

Yes you can get in done for $4 in India, but from my experience you get exactly what you pay for. I've had so called writing experts from India, Philipines and elsewhere send me pages of complete and utter garbage that had copy that related to my competion I would love someone to disprove me and show me examples of quality content from India, there may be decent companies that can do it but I've yet to find one. Be very carefully as you may end up wasting valuable time and effort

Yes, the time spent actually writing is usually dwarfed by the time spent researching and thinking.

I have seen 'cheap' articles and they are neither engaging, informative or witty. Thus no reason to be read. They are also not written in a style that is intended for people who are reading on the internet which requires a very different format to writing in all other forms of media.

People reading on the Internet want the info yesterday, they don't want to wade through waffle, pointless sentences and have to hunt for the one answer to a question they seek.

Content needs to be clearly laid out allowing for scanning which is how users read Internet content.

I was reading samples from an article site yesterday and they almost sent me to sleep.

If you just want backlinks that's one thing, but if you want content that encourages clicks through to your site, gives your site credibility, encourages subscription and user feedback, you need quality content.
