Hi everyone

I hope I'm on the right place for this question...I know nothing about this stuff.

My son has set me up with a free website - it doesn't seem to be coming up on google after 6 weeks.

Is it possible to make this kind of website be recognised by google ?

Thanks - David

Are there any links from other sites, back to your website? That is how google finds websites, by following the hyperlinks to them. A more complex question is optomising the site to appear on google for certain search terms. This is more difficult. It requires a lot of work and can take months in some cases.

There is a lot of good information out there on SEO but you need a fair knowledge of web design to understand it. I made errors with free websites at the start and would take a look at sites like netdragon.co.uk if you are a novice or not too technical.

Wow, thanks for all the replies...

Just to clarify - this free website is just my personal "hobby website" - it doesn't need to be any more than it is, but I'd like to see it coming up for certain words.

I was told it wasn't coming up because it's a free website, but from what you all say this isn't the case.

As someone on the cusp of retirement I don't really want to try to master SEO - just want a simple way to get this site coming up a bit...

Thanks - David

I feel your frustration David but unfortunately you and everybody else on the web wants the same thing and it's not easy. Please do read the beginners Web Hosting, Design and Search Engine pages at netdragon.co.uk for some really basic explanations which may help.

I'd be content to just have "embossed foil business cards London" showing in 1st few pages of google - is this possible ?

So, which is it a business site or a hobby ?

Just to clarify - this free website is just my personal "hobby website"

When was the last time you searched for _anything_ and saw a "free" site listed ?
Thats how likely it'll be to get yours up there, even with SEO.

Hi David,

There are a huge number of factors involved with how well your website will rank in google. It's nothing to do with it being free, although perhaps a keyword rich domain would cost money.

Even if it's just a hobby (that's how our business started) it's fun to read up about SEO and find things you can do to help push your websites ranking.

It's enjoyable to watch your website climb the rankings :)
