Why does it always have to be free? you don't provide your services for free so why do you expect an app developer to do the same?

I had a feeling I might get a reply from you my dear old friend @fisicx - hence the "Thanks for being helpful & friendly in advance :)" in my original post!

Thanks @Ian J - good to know about the 10 word limit.

Thanks @Shopclicks will give that a try.

And Scott at Karma Content (can't tag you for some reason... maybe the @ in the middle?) :) but sadly I have an iPhone

It wasn't really directed at you Hazel, it was more to do with everyone wanting everything for free. I regard paying for rank checkers and other services as an investment not a cost. Paying for services means I help keep developers employed which benefits everyone.

I use serpfox, the pro version is far better than all the freebies.

Often the pricing seems to be aimed at SEO companies rather than individual website owners as they are only cost effective if the customer can run quite a few companies through them.

Earlier this week I was trying to find a website / company that could give me a list of all of my backlinks but Ahrefs minimum package is $79 per month and Majestic is £30 per month payable at £90 per quarter

I guess that Serpfox starter plan at $10 per month is reasonably priced for keeping track of 50 keywords although the 10 keywords in the free plan is enough for me

The problem with rank checkers is people become obessesed with them. I get bucket loads of visiors from Google but have no idea what they searched for (because of secure search). The rank checker doesn't help identify these visitors and to be honest I don't really care - as long as they convert it means I'm ranking for the things that matter.

The free variant for free backlinks is Google Webmaster Tools (now Search Console). It supposedly gives you a sample of all your backlinks, as well as a register of your newest links, which you should check regularly.
I personally suggest Majestic, as it's an invaluable tool for any serious SEO.

As for free ranking checker, I can check the ranking on any website for any keyword in less than 5 seconds using only Google Chrome.

Here is how I do it:
Go to Chrome and open the settings
To to "Manage Search Engines"
Scroll to the bottom and you'll find three tabs to fill.
The first two fill however you find it reasonable, the last you need to paste the following:
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=%s&pws=0&hl=en&gl=uk&num=100

This formula will remove all personalization from your search (e.g. history, google plus, etc.), then apply a filter for language and location, in this case english and UK and lastly make the search results page list up to 100 results. Then you can make this the default search engine for your browser.

Then, go get this extension for Chrome:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...ension/nedmifdnblopopbcmdcgflboaclchebg?hl=en

It shows you the current number for each result, as well as the change in ranking from your last visit of the particular search query.

Type a keyword in the address bar, hit enter, hit ctrl + F and search for your website. If you don't find it in the top 100, you can safely assume you don't rank (different than not being indexed).

Setup takes 5 minutes and then each check takes only seconds. You get the most accurate results, you skim the SERP for all your competition, and it's free.

Hi Guys,

Can anyone recommend any free sites that check the ranking of keywords on Google? I used to use one but I can't remember what it's called?

Thanks for being helpful & friendly in advance :)

Hi Hazel, I use Serplab co uk . Free and does everything like other rank checkers . If you have multiple sites and many keywords it is better to upgrade.

I have tried many ranking tools, but MOZ seems to be by far the best. I would never recommend that you search manually to check your rank because the results can often be distorted by your location, preferences and history.

It is a pricy tool, but if you want definitive results then it's worth the money.

Might be bit late, but did you know, that with Majestic free account (sorry @fisicx ) that you can get full backlink reports on your own sites. If you can verify that you own them (either through Google Analytics or download a verification file) . You only need to paid account for site you don't own.
