Framing pages from old magazines to sell?

I've acquired some old magazines that have little value as a whole but some interesting content that would look great in a frame for display. One is a 1929 magazine with adverts for flying schools, body enhancement, guitar lessons etc., I'd look to use the original pages or individual ads to produce one off collage's, not to copy or reproduce for mass circulation.

Will simply cutting the mag up for display avoid any copyright issues?

Not looking to make a fortune, profits to go to a local charity I support.

Interesting one first look on good old Google seemed to indicate this was not a problem then on further reading it could be sailing pretty close to the wind

Is the magazine still being produced, and/or are the companies in the ads still trading?

Doesn't copyright end after 75 years? Or is that only for certain things

Yes it's still being published, which surprised me and yes, some of the advertisers are well known brands such as Gillette, but not the one's I'd look to use which are old tech, snake oil and Charles Atlas, be a superman type ads...

Cheers, that says a lot, but I can't work out how the huge market in reproduction signs on Ebay, Etsy etc., using ESSO, Gulf, Miller Lite, Kellogs, Lambretta and dozens more well known brands, is able to flourish?

Yes interesting, was chatting with my son yesterday who reminded of an incident at Santa Pod when a trader there selling signs ie Esso, LandRover etc etc apparently could not prove to Trading Standards (who were doing the rounds) these had come from a "licensed source" had them all confiscated. As suggested by others here if the magazine or advertising are still out there probably best to approach them.

It's just an idea that started by clearing the loft and spare room of junk. We have a wholesale picture frame manufacturer who's as cheap as chips nearby so I might make a couple up, stick them on Ebay, see what interest there is and go down the formal route if it looks worthwhile.

Our local antiques place has loads of these for sale. Doesn’t seem to be an issue. There is a big difference between reproductions of branded goods and just flogging pages from magazines. I don’t think you will have a problem.

Just get on with it.
I view it as highly unlikely that your proposed actons will come to the attention of any interested orgaisation.
Even if it did, and the organisation took exception, the onus would be on them to explain precsely how you were breaking the law.
At which point you either challenge or accept.

Hi Lucan Unlordly,

As far as I am aware there are no restrictions on selling anything you own as a second hand or upcycled item. You own the magazine, you cut it up, you sell the bits, no problem. I have been doing a variation on this for a while now.

In saying that you need to be careful if you were adding to the image, so for example (and this is purely to illustrate my point), if there was an add for something, say tyres, with a girl wearing a fancy dress, if you were to frame that and add a title that said something like 'Bringing The Gucci To The Rubber', then watch out for Gucci, they'll probably come after you

But just straight cut out and frame, no problem. Also don't forget the option of just selling the cut out page by itself, then there is no hassle with get it framed, posting a framed image etc. You will find it easier and not have to deal with requests for specific styles/colours of frames. You will probably be able to expand your sales into the likes of USA easier.
