Hi, Im planning opening a sandwich shop/takeaway. I'm planning on doing quite a bit of hot food, so would have an oven, fryer, coffee machine etc, and all the refrigeration.

Could anyone please give me an idea what they pay in utility bills for anything kind of similar? Electricity, water, gas. Its so hard estimate these. I know everywhere is different and depends on the deal you get but would just be good to get an idea.

Any other pearls of wisdom greatly appreciated for new venture.

Thanks.

Its a good question and alas my cafe/bar was too long ago to give you decent figures. It certainly was a lot more than I originally estimated.

The other hidden cost is maintenance. Commercial kitchen appliances need a lot more maintenance than domestic ones. Things like fridge seals, dishwahers, etc seem to need regular repair/replacement and this cost needs to be factored in.

We have a large cafe/eatery with a commercial kitchen (electric cooker, two large fridges), front service counter and seperate kitchen for dishwasher, 2 freezers, another fridge, toaster, panini grill, coffee machine etc.
Our bill is approx. £400-500 per quarter inc Vat.

Thanks for that. Not so bad that. I was thinking it could be more. Scary thought all them elements hot all day. Cheers.

Our kitchen and premises has probably double this equipment, we pay £1000 per month for gas and electric. £120 for water.

Make a note of any contract dates that you take out when choosing a utility supplier so that you will be able to cancel the contract in time or you could be rolled over onto much higher prices.

I see, that is much higher. Is it a restaurant that you have? Must be cooking a lot of food with that power. Thanks loads for that.
Can I ask also, as its proving hard to find out, do you know which is cheaper to run out of gas or electricity? I know gas is good for cooking on like the hobs and griddle, but things like a big commercial fryer can be electric.

    Hi

We are opening a coffee shop / wine bar ourselves next month, and electricity was playing on my mind as well.

We have lots of lights, no gas central heating, so electric will be high, so we have tried to help this by installing each light fitting with energy saving light bulbs, as there is approx 40, we have also installed a log burner for the colder months, to keep the customers warm.
The 3 drinks refridgerators that are behind the bar kick out heat as well...
We have large coffee machine, toaster, grill etc...so we can only see what the costs turn out to be...but we will be having an energy meter put in by the company that is doing our electric to keep an eye on things.

You should calculate the cost from the smallest detail for each of your products. Then multiply numbers with the number of sales you estimate how much the episode a month.
From there you can easily estimate the expenses you will have to plan for your business.

If I were you, i would find ways to change the way their business in terms of pros and cons of capital. Find the best direction to go. So should not change and find out the boredom which will lead to failure and you're sure to have the bankruptcy on your business

We run a Cost Optimisation service meant to get best deals with any of your suppliers when it comes to utilities and not only.

So if you think you will be paying too much at some point for any of the above, let me know and I am sure we can almost halve down your costs.

Or if you think you are not too much of a negociator yourself, let me know, and we will have that covered.

    Cheers

Can you give me some more information on this?

Having my costs halved sounds interesting ...

    Hi Livia

The Cost Optimisation service is centred on the need to manage overheads without causing any disruption to your product or service.

It is something you should definately have a look into especially if you are experiencing cashflow problems.

Please PM if you may find this of any interest :)

    Thank you
