Fish and Chips

Honestly I’d think twice about just eat if your doing £5k p/w, the commissions are huge and they keep your money for a period rather than put it straight in your bank. But idk that’s up to you, maybe look at how much business comes through their own app, how much through phone and how much through in store collection.

If a high amount is in store collection then just eat would probably benefit, you don’t want to risk existing customers using just eat.

In my situation just eat is the final resort, I think you should try making a Facebook presence first as a high amount of our income is driven by Facebook on its own. You can use it to push people onto the app, we use it to promote offers, you have to do paid boosts to get anywhere though. Or do them ‘like and share to win xyz’ they work quite well.

I’d be interested in going halves haha but I’d be no good as I can’t cook Also probably pretty daft to do something like that until my own shop is fully established.

Yeah I need to find out whats coming from where he doesn't break it down, he just wants out for his family life basically and has been offered a job with his father in law mon-fri and will be done at 3pm to pick kids up, which is what he wants and needs at min. Obviously he will be on less money but hes not bothered. Waiting on his proper accounts so time will tell, but it seems cheap enough to me

If it’s a good price and doing £5k then I’d go for it, margins in pizza shops are good and if you CAN get good staff in it doesn’t have to be all headache and long hours provided your willing to sacrifice a bit of income for time.

Ask your mate who his best staff member is and maybe offer them a wage plus % of profit or something, just so he’s more invested in the business and would look after things that bit more than your average ‘get me out of here’ employee.

But yeah good luck it sounds like a good opportunity!

When you are just starting your business do not count on big profits. Especially if you decide to sell fish and chips. This range is in many places. My opinion you invest more money than make a profit. To begin to get profit you need time and capital investment.

Fish and chips used to be seen as an inexpensive meal relative to other options. Now many fish and chip shops seem to sell very few portions of fish, but many portions of chicken etc for one third of the price.

Buyers also have the options of supermarket ready meals, and a vast range of alternative fast food delivered from one of several phone apps.

Chippies work best with a queue of customers, buying consistently freshly-fried fish and chips. An old-school chippy is not an attractive market to be entering now unless you can guarantee food of such high quality that people will queue for it.

All fish and chip shops near me are now selling pizza, burgers kebabs etc think its to much of a small market to be able to solely sell fish and chips

When I want proper fish & chips...I won't go anywhere near a place that has diversified into pizza & kebabs (such places tip "Aunt Bessie's" frozen chips into a bench top fryer!) ...I want to see a big long row of stainless steel deep frying machines on the go constantly ...& a big long queue of fat people lining up to buy them - nothing else will do!

    I have to go 10 miles to get great fish and chips, but there are 9 others at a shorter distance one about 700 metres away, but the one I use also has a long row of customers waiting outside

    What could be easier, just throw a few fish and chips in some oil and serve, unfortunatly you need to know what great fish and chips look like, what temps and fresh oil or lard, make your own batter and be able to constantly turn out great food, treat them with contempt and you have few customers, do it well and make a good living just the same as most things

    My local chippy had a coal fired fryer. When they eventually closed, about 10 years ago, it was dismantled and rebuilt at Beamish. Nothing compares.

    Good Lord! That must have been a fascinating operation - a sort of super-Aga?
    To be honest, unless you knew you would not really know. The fryers themselves wer just standard (although a bit old). As I say, though, it is now working hard at Beamish Museum.

    In my humble opinion, you're potentially buying four things here:
    1. Goodwill - the name and reputation in the local area. Something you wouldn't have if you just started up from scratch. Could actually be a negative value if their rep isn't good.
    2. The Premises - yes it's lease but is the location good. Would you struggle to get another unit with such a good location?
    3. Staff - is there a good and reliable team. It's bloody hard to find good staff but if their good workers, happy and don't need training then there's a real value to this.
    4. Shop fit - if you did start up from scratch, you'd need fixtures and fittings. They are already in this shop, and installed, but used. So what would they be worth to you if you opened elsewhere? Including installation.

    Work out of a value for each element and see what you end up with. Don't assume that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, as it probably isn't.

    Oh, really? As simple as that? And you work out value of 1, 2 and 3 ...how? By plugging some numbers into a some crystal ball cum calculator hybrid device?

    This advice ranks on par with other genius advice we often get here, like
    - just improve sales and make more profit
    - just put a manager in to replace you
    - just take your kidney out and put a new one in.

    Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy.

    thought I would throw in my 2 chips worth!!

    Chippie near me had people queuing out of the door on a friday night. They take 2 weeks off holiday a year and the place closes down.

    They dont open on a sunday which I find odd.

    I would imagine average order value around £7.

    They also sell chicken.

    There is another chippie on the high street and they have a sit in part as well. They are a chain mind you.
