This is my first import and i am looking to import around 1500KG of products for around 12 CMB - FOB Guangzhou. I am trying to understand the duty and vat calculation as best as possible. Seems pretty straight forward for one particular item with one particular commodity code.
Starts getting complicated when you have more than one type of product within the same shipment with a different commodity code.

Please can you also help me with the following:

I will be importing products which have approx 4 different commodity codes, and i am struggling to work out the true cost of duty and vat for each

For example:

If i have £5000 value of goods, shipping fee is lets say £1000.00

I have 5 different types of products in my container with 5 different comm codes

1. Product 1 has customs value of £2000 - comm code 4%

2. Product 2 has value of £1000 - comm code 10%

3.Product 3 has value of £500 - comm code 7%

4.Product 4 has value of £1500 - comm code 10%

Question is how do i determine the Duty for each? for product 1 would it just be £2000 + £1000 * 10% = £300?

If i was to use the SAME shipping cost of £1000.00 for product 2, 3, and 4. then surely this cannot be right as this is shipping cost is for the TOTAL of the products and i will be paying a lot of DUTY on each product and hence even more on VAT

I would appreciate any help and advice in clarifying how this would be worked out. Surely importing different products with different commodity codes within one shipment is common practice and there has to be a way of working this out.

I have rang the HMRC helpline many times and they are pretty useless, they just go on their website and start reading from there, and their website does not even cover something like this. One person even told me, i need access to the UK integrated tariff, and that i have to subscribe to it! at a cost of about £350.00!?

Any help on this would be much appreciated guys

Many thanks for your help and i look forward to your reply.

Hi there, I believe you've sent me an e-mail earlier today and I'll get back to you with a comprehensive reply but in a nutshell it is possible forus ro do a customs entry with multle different tarrif headings. The shipping costs used to calculate the respective duty are apportioned between the different headings.

Best regards,
Glen
