finding out who owns a phone number?

Is there any way to find out who owns a particular phone number?

I have just had a really bizarre/rude conversation with someone on the phone and Im trying to fnd out the name of the business that the call originated from.

Im in a fighting mood!

Let it ride!

Hi Claire

Presumably you were called rather than the other way around and you 1471'd to get the number.

Best thing to do is call the number and see who answers and ask who they are. Presumably it was a poor sales call?

I don't think there is an easy way of finding out who called you other than that.

You can register with the telephone preference service (TPS) 0845 07 007 07 to prevent further direct marketing calls

Kind regards

Ian

Got it!, thankyou (it's an interesting result), not quite sure what to do now.

the lady who rang (for those of you wondering what all this is about lol) was fom a lady making enquiries about my music classes. She was ringing from where she works - a secretary from a comprehensive school and was just asking general questions about the sessions/costs etc, then out of the blue, made quite an accusation about me and my business and then hung up.

I rang her back, but she didn't answer.

The thing is, was she making an enquiry (and therefore the allegation) on behalf of the school, or was it just a personal thing. That's the bit I would like to know! If its a personal thing, i would be inclined to let it go (put it down to hormones etc), but if the allegation was made in a professionl capacity, I would obviously like to at least discuss it further!

Anway now that Jorge has found the contact details for me, perhaps I should write to the headmaster of the school and ask for clarification (I did leave her a message asking her to ring me back, but she hasn't)

What do you think, I'm feeling mischeivous, shall I write the letter?

Definitely. The Head will give her a hard time for using the school phone to be horrible to people - this being a school (and therefore a public sector institution) they are bound to have a policy on this stuff into a filing cabinet somewere. And if they haven't, they'll write one to deal with it.

Go Claire!

If you do write, be sure to keep it very professional. The whole tone should be that a concern was raised, the validity of which appears in question, but you'd like to learn more. If it was me, I'd send it to the secretary only. The fact that it was sent to the school address would probably be enough to spur her into action (hopefully, with an explanation or apology). It would serve no purpose to copy the head.

I think that this depends on how vicious she was on the phone to you. If she was being quite vile then I would do a phased response.

1: write to her at the school asking what's it's all about? Perhaps as an afterthought ask what the grevious procedures there might be.

2: If no response then ask the headmaster.

I'm tempted to agree with Steve wholeheartedly in the name of not stirring up trouble. However, I think some further investigation is merited because (a) you're unsure whether it was a personal or a school matter and (b) if there is someone out there dissing your brand you may want to know why, and you may want to do something about it. If she'll say rude things about your business to you, she'll certainly say them to her friends and colleagues.

How you go about that further investigation, and to what extent it's merited, I guess you have to decide based on your gut feeling about the incident.

well the adventure continues......

I have now had an email from a mystery person, making the same allegations (in a roundabout sort of way) as my mystery phone caller.

I have a feeling that they are one and the same person (partly becuase of the information that Jorge was able to provide me with and partly because they didn't cover their tracks very well in their last email!)

But....., is there any way to find out who owns an email address? I have tried to do a reverse email check but got nothing, don't really want to bother Jorge with this again as Im sure he has better things to be doing.

Is there an easy way to find out?

you can find out from the domain if it is a private one. Harder to trace Hotmail, Yahoo etc. The email may amount to unlawful harassment and the Police may be able to take action.

I have successfully brought actions against individuals who harass others and most were by text message and emails. CID investigated and cautioned them.

:D I have just found a link to this thread in my webstats. How funny and what a blast from the past this is!

I am having to dig to the depths of my memory here but the email shenanigans did continue for a while along with some weird phone calls but I am glad to say that the thing did eventually die a death (unless there is something I don't know about :D).

So thank you all for your concerns and also to Jorge for coming to the rescue that day (real Heath Ledger stuff). The business has moved on somewhat in the intervening months although our franchisees sometimes encounter the occassional 'character'. They have a much better coping mechanism though because they pass them all on to me :D
