Finding clients when they have little in common

I do consulting in mathematical modelling and computer simulations. All the clients I got so far I contacted myself. When I did, some thought I was what they dreamed of (but without advertising publicly such needs). What they have in common is a need for applied maths, numerical programming, etc. without in-house capabilities (in part due to their small size). Unfortunately, this is not a pattern readily exploitable (what would be the right place or the right keywords to look for such companies?). Any idea would be welcome.

Can you identify the business types of your clients?

Look on linkedin and see who is doing what. Go to wikipedia and follow links. Go on maths forums and see who's got problems. Do the same on computer and modelling forums.

There are loads of places to look. You just need to start looking. It might take 10 hours or it might take 100. It's not different to anyone else looking for leads, you need to become a salesman first than then a modeller. In fact you will probably be do a lot more marketing and sales than you ever do modelling.

Or you pay someone to go get the leads for you.
