Facebook started great then flopped

My client (a jeweller) started a Facebook business page in April and announced opening of the shop - they got a 30,000 reach, Great!
But - Since then the reach has dropped to almost nothing. Have they done something wrong? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Have they done something wrong?

Yes. First of all they built their business on Facebook. When they had an audience of 30,000 they should have been getting people signed up to mailing lists on their own website.

Never put all your eggs in one basket, especially when the basket belongs to someone else.

I'm on a much smaller scale to that - 450 likes - but find Facebook extremely hit and miss. Sometimes a certain post will spread well and others a similar tactic will do poorly.

I guess the thing is to keep at it and keep trying different things at different times. With Facebook you either keep at it or give up.

Maintaining your Facebook page is a great task that you need to paid heed to. Posting interesting and attractive things on your Fan page and creating communities to pull more visitors will keep up your visitors.

Those 30k followed the link to see what was going on, realised there wasn't a proper website and never returned.

The whole exercise was pointless.

I love this advice!

It puts everything into perspective and should directly answer your question.

Your social media strategy should not end in the social network in itself. Create a conversion funnel which means leading them up to your website and having them buy the products.

Try think of Facebook in much the same way as this forum post. That Initial 30K reach may be nothing more than the same as the spammers on this thread, just replying with a view of promoting their own business, with some totally pointless and irrelevant advice! (not all posters I must reiterate, but I think you can easily spot the irrelevant ones)

That 30K reach is pointless, if it wasn't well targeted. I know a photographer who is enjoying relative success, where he uses facebook to target, people who have recently set their status to engaged, and live within the Wiltshire area. He then has campaigns targeted to them. He implements the same for people who have just had a baby.

It's a narrow focus (Sniper focus) not Machine gunning that works on facebook.

Facebook is not just targeting many likes/followers. You also need to interact with them and posting some interesting stuff regarding the business like promotions, coupons, sale or the like. It should be something that makes them go "maybe I should check this out".
