I see Gmail as a service that Google sort of have to have. All big internet companies offer a free hotmail esque email service. So I doubt losing market share would kill the service, it's not as if Google depend on it, wouldn't be suprised if they don't even make any money from it - the only value is the stats they can collect from people usage of it, and I guess it builds their brand a little.

It will be more interesting to see how Google's push in to social networking goes. If they made that succesful, it would tie together a lot of their services and give them a real push forwards (as if they need it!).
