Does anyone have experience of use of FaceBook buttons on websites, so people can share/favourite a page?

I've wanted to add this on to a site for some time, but it gets lost in with all the other jobs, ideas and tweaks? But this morning I ran the site through an SEO tool and found it had almost 1,000 Facebook shares. However, I've never really noticed any considerablt traffic from Facebook in analytics.

A few questions I am specifically looking for answers on:

Do you know if people actually use theses buttons?
Any statistics (even guesstimate) on how many users use the buttons?
Any negatives?

As part of an overall balanced marketing plan, things like FB, Twitter, Pinterest (etc) can help your SEO and branding. Some sites now use bribes to encourage people to like specific posts (eg the first two paragraphs are free to read, and to read the rest of the content the site visitor must click the FB like button). If it's a well written and informative piece, it can really gather lots of likes.

Any negatives?
It takes people off the site.

If you have worked hard to get people onto the site with the aim of converting why would you want them to head off to a SM site to share a link? It's untargeted and rarely leads to a new customer.

Keep people on the site, don't give an excuse to head of to pinterest, get distracted and never return.
