Exporting from the UK into Mainland China

This is my first post on this forum but it seems a good place to find out if anyone has experience of exporting UK products into Mainland China.

I have been living in China for the past 5 years and for the past 3 years running a UK limited company importing good into the UK. I first start off exporting Art work from Shenzhen about 3 years.

In my first few deals I was burnt with quality issues / dealing with unprofessional companies but after finding the right suppliers, that I could develop good relationships with, my business started to prosper. I would say developing a good relationship(guanxi)with your supplier is actually the best way to avoid getting your fingers burn here. By developing a relationship I mainly mean eating food, getting drunk together and singing karaoke.

Anyway,times have changed the RMB (Chinese Yuan) has appreciated, the pound is weak and there is a huge demand in China for QUALITY GOODS. Chinese consumers interest in Red Wine, Milk Products and Perfume has developed significantly over the last 2 years. We now want to source UK products ( Wine and Dairy) and import them into China. We already have Chinese retailers that wish to buy in bulk.

I would like to know if anyone else on this forum has any experience of exporting from the UK into China? and if so any problems that they have encountered.

Seems like there are very few UK companies that are doing this.

As a UK wholesaler or manufacturer, is exporting to Chinese companies something that you would consider as part of your business plan?

what barriers and risks do you see in exporting your products to China? or do you concetrate on sourcing products from China?

Its the way forward 100%, I have also been living in Shanghai for a few years.

I dobut their will any issues with exporting from UK, but the problems occur on the China side.

If your importing dairy and fresh products you should make friends with customs to ensure your good pass quickly.

I heard that M&S has a few issues when they started importing into China, they seem to be doing pretty well now and expanding.

The two main obstacles are all the red tape with Chinese customs, and also actually getting your drinks into the shops and clubs.

As for the customs clearance, that's no problem with a good clearance agent (if you need one message me and i can put you in touch)

There is a huge potential market here for imported alcohols, but in my experience its very difficult to actually get any of the big distributors to take your products. Shops, bars, and clubs usually take their alcohols on sale or return from the distributor, and as far as I understand it the only way to get a distributor to take your product is with enough cash or enough guanxi!

Whilst I understand the pound is weak, we actually work in the realms of Leadership Development and Management Development. Many companies report back to ust hat China are very keen to prevent foreign goods from entering China as they prefer to try and push their own products.
We can now deliver International UK Management Qualifications , but have never thought of offering it to China as an exported service as didn't think there would be a demand for English Management Qualifications?
