so far ive only got a few games, and reference type apps like magazines, and newspaper app..

I use 'Things' for task management: http://culturedcode.com/things/ipad/

I use 'Flipbook' as a fantastic magazine of everything I'm interested in - here's a good overview: http://blog.thoughtpick.com/2010/08/flipbook-the-imagazine.html

Evernote for the iPad is really good - it keeps things sync'd across all your devices - and is one of the best 'thought capture' pieces of software I've come across: http://www.evernote.com/about/home.php

Other than that, well 'essential' depends on what you want to do with it ...

Whatever you do ... don't download Angry Birds ! :D

The find my iPad app is very useful in case of lost or stolen iPad. (you can get the thing to Beep through a web browser on your PC if you've forgotten where you've put it in the house. Or wipe the iPad if it gets stolen, it will show you a GPS location of where it is on the map.

You say you won't do work on your iPad, I'd wager that will change within weeks!

The most used app on my iPad is "ithoughts HD" - mind mapping software and absolutely brilliant.

Also, "Atomic" is a very good alternative browser and "G-Whizz" is a great google integrated tool for google apps.

Hmmm where to start, my iPad is bursting with apps, I would use:

Pages, Analytics and Angry birds......You haven't experienced an ipad until you have tried angry birds, or worms, that's pretty good!
