My partner is waiting for her employer reference number from HMRC - she has been waiting 3 weeks and been told it might not come through until 1st May. Her insurers need it for the employers liability insurance. Is there anything she can do as she is wanting to open up for business hopefully next week?

It has been an issue for some time. Has she got an acknowledgment from HMRC or anything that her insurers may accept. It is a very common issue now and a 6 weeks plus wait is not uncommon.

The annoying thing is, when I applied for the ERN, HMRC suggested 5 working days (which was two weeks ago). She is just waiting for a response back from the insurers, so hopefully they have a solution if it is a common issue.

This is when you told HMRC that you were to employ staff? - it is usually called a PAYE refeence (accompanied by the Accounts office reference). It suddely occurred to e that you may be talking about something else?

Yeah, thats the one. Needed the UTR before being able to register for employing staff. Got the UTR then applied straight away for the ERN/PAYE reference.

    Hi @BubbaWY,

You can arrange insurance cover without an ERN number - just let your insurer know once the ERN number comes through.
