Can you please tell us what the minimum time for this is please as we are looking at taking someone on for a week as a trial. We only need this for a week for a work experience student but we can only get quotes for a year!

At a guess this is something stipulated by a clueless jobsworth at the school or college who has unilaterally decided that a school pupil on a work experience placement is an employee.

If that's right, tell them to get lost. We've come across this in the past where they wanted us to write to our insurers with the name of the pupil. We pointed out that (a) we don't have to do this with new employees, let alone other callers (b) the pupil wouldn't be an employee and covered by employer's liability anyway and (c) we have public liabillity insurance which covers liability to visitors and we don't (and won't) write to the insurance company every time somebody walks through the door.

Never heard anything more after that.

You may not need it -
    "
In most cases you will not need employers liability insurance for volunteers or those who are:
    • Unemployed people involved in training programme's.
    • Students on a work experience.
    • Unpaid, short-term interns."

I beg to differ on what you do need Employers Liability Insurance for and one of them is work experience students as I understand it. Of course you could take a chance but then again would you really want to end up on the wrong end of a legal lawsuit

The link that you provide says that you do not need employer's liability insurance for students on a work experience programme. Given that the link you provide disproves your statement, where does your understanding come from.

    Hi David
    Page 5 in part says:

In some cases you will not need additional employers' liability insurance for volunteers or for:
    students who work for you unpaid;
a school student on a work experience programme.*

Insurers will usually cover the above under an existing employers' liability policy, and there is generally no need to inform your insurer if you take on any of the above.

If you do not currently have any employers' liability cover you should talk to your insurer before taking on any of the above.

Or am I just misreading the page??

The OP does not make it clear if they actually have Employers Liability Insurance, and worse case scenario...
Student comes to work for your company
Whilst there a heavy piece of industrial machinery crushes them to death
    Parents obviously are upset

And then someone says surely that company was insured to have the student on site
    Ooops....
