I take it the folk who frown on team building feel the same way about wasted time at networking events?

God forbid a team building exercise that may see sales staff working alongside marketing folk from the office next door who they've never met. Team building is as much about breaking down barriers, learning a bit about your fellow employees so the cogs mesh nicely. My missus goes to work when she's sick so she doesn't let her work colleagues down, many of whom she's met socially through events put on by her employer.

Networking events - people choose to attend? Or required to attend?

Not sure I understand the question?
In a former role I had to attend BNI networking meetings in my own time once a week at 7.15am. I wasn't given a choice.
For another employer an inter departmental team building 'It's a Knockout' style tournament was optional but always well attended.

Different experiences.

Have had to attend client functions as an employee. Have had to attend some training and team building events as an employee.

Networking events, both professional and business, have always been optional for me.
