Email and Website Advice

Don't know if this is on the right section but no doubt someone or a Mod' will soon tell me if not.

I've just set up a business and want to set up an email address associated with that business name and would also want to secure a domain name as well.

Could someone spare me ten minutes of their time to tell me what to and not to do.

Only a small concern and being set up with minimal (very!) funding.

Do you need hosting?

If not, head over to 123reg and purchase the domain name your require.
Then go over to google apps and setup a free account - Google will provide information you on what you need to do when you want google to control the emails for the domain name by changing the DNS entries through 123reg's control panel.

You will then have email for your domain which will allow you to control and access it from anywhere through pretty much any device.

Job done

1) Register domain from 123-reg.co.uk (£8 per 2 years).
2) Register some web hosting - I recommend Vidahost which is £22 a year for the basic package
3) Once the hosting is set up, you will receive an email from the host with details for the domain. Login to your account at 123-reg and change the nameservers to those in the email from the web host (for vidahost it's ns1.vidahost.com and ns2.vidahost.com
4) Once all set up (give it 24 hours to all set up) login to the hosting and there is an email account creation tool

Hosting is a place where you can upload files needed to run a website.
So I guess the question is do you need a website or do you just want email?

I would go down the router mentioned before..

Buy your domain (123reg, fasthost, Othello(memeber here))
Get some cheap hosting (VidaHost, FatCow ect.)
Once you have your hosting set up log on to your 123-reg domain management (control panel) and change your nameservers to the ones provided by your hosting.
Then go back to your hosting provider and there is a email account creation tool, create the email account you want.

Job done.

support - I would rather £8 and be able to get support than be left in the lurch... and a domain from GBBO is only free for the first 2 years

VH is run by the techies who also look after the servers, so when you have an issue, it's not being dealt with by a "helpdesk" but the actual system owners.

VH owners Dom and Seb are really well known on here, post a lot and are really helpful. I sent a support request last night at 10pm and within 10 minutes it was sorted.

HI are so restrictive on their servers, while VH are flexible.

ish... heard some horror stories and after the 2 years free, you might want to move to another provider as they aren't the cheapest on renewal.

I have a "free domain" and a few clients have got the "free domain" but it's horses for courses, I am not really bothered about saving £8 on a domain, especially when you need to email them to change the NS so you can use it on your own hosting (I had to when I registered the domain, but might have changed since).

Excellent thread.

I too have just registered on 123-reg and now processing with Vidahost, very happy with both and wouldn't have known where to start (& ended up paying more for a domain elsewhere) if it wasn't for this thread.
