Domains or number of links

Have been looking at Google Webmaster tools this morning and the bit where it shows the number of links to your webpage.

I have a question:

Is it better to have lots of different domains pointing to your website or links from fewer domains with lots of links from those....does that make sense ?

So for example is it better to have 500 domains pointing to you with 30,000 links or say 100 domains with 30,000 links ?

Better to have a mix of everything. Suppose there is a baby forum and lots of people reccomend you, that will indicate to google that there is a lot of trust. But you also need a good spread across a range of domains each citing you are place to buy from. On the other hand, a single link from a top baby site could make all the other links redundant.

By far the best is to have more unique linking domains rather than tons of links from fewer domains.

Having a larger number of linking domains shows a varied link profile and indicates a more popular site as it is seemingly harder to attract new sites to link to you.

As mentioned already, there are some cases whereby a lot of links from one domain is useful such as a popular forum related to your industry, or an established industry news site.

In the main though I'd also go for diversity in the linking root domains over raw link counts every time.

What is more important still is having links from quality sources.

You could have loads from a site with a PR of 2, not worth as much as 1 from a site with a PR of 6.

Unfortunately SEO is not that simple, there are loads of factors going on. Even if you have the right links, you still need the correct anchor text, and so it goes on.

If you are serious about SEO I would advise getting <link drop removed> , just watch out for the cowboys making daft promises.

yeah its for sure that links from different IPs or domains increase your site authority but again its important to keep in mind the quality of that domains as well, like 4,5 hundred domain links of rank more than 4 is fantastic for you site.

The PR of the source page is often irrelevant. It's the authority of the site that matters. Consider ukbf, almost all the pages have zero PR but they still rank very well.
