Hi there,
I know 1and1 definetly allow you to change A, MX and CName records, you can see a screenshot here: http://faq.1and1.co.uk/image/domains/dnsSettings/mxChange.png and they are pretty damn cheap as well!

We are an ICANN and Nominet accredited Registrar trading since 1995 with in-house Support via email/phone/ticket. We provide dns management via Plesk control panel for domain names and shared hosting. Changes will be recognised locally very quickly but obviously global propagation (24-48hrs) will apply.

I think you are confusing domain registration with a DNS service.
Domain registration includes the information as to which are the name servers for that domain, not the actual A, MX etc records, which are served by those nameservers.
So I don't see a problem to use a host's DNS servers. If you want to change then you still have control by changing the nameservers with your registrar.
As said, changes cannot be instant, but I do dislike this "global propagation" myth. It makes it sound like changes take longer to reach South America than the South of England. It's bunkum. The reason DNS changes take time depends on two things:
- The TTL on the records at the moment of change
- Whether caches respect that TTL. Windows PCs do not, for instance
If rapid change matters to you, then choose DNS where you have control of the TTL. Shortening it immediately before change will help.

All I want to do is have my domains managed by one provider and host with a different provider - I will then choose either to point name servers at my host or use the registrar (for want of a better word) to point A records at my host and Mx at google (for example)
I want to separate the 2 as I have been caught out in the past where my website was down and so was my control panel, hence I couldn't change Dns for DR purposes.
For domain services some people say 123-reg are ok but given there link with fasthosts and 1&1 I am not so sure, hence my Q re domain registrar/dns provider

However it *sounds* like what you need is really just a DNS Service (which will save you initially any costs involved in transferring the domains) - depending on the number of zones you need, we can supply that from £1/year/domain.

We provide Domain Registration and DNS hosting through Enom. Also Nominet Tag Holder for UK domains.
We are not the cheapest though at £25 (ex VAT) per year per domain because ours tends to be managed registration. Customers ring up or email and ask for changes to be made. Plus you can pay via BACS, Cheque or cash if you really want. But we can provide domain access via Enom's control panel so you can change your own DNS when you want to if necessary.

But if you want cheap then ukReg (part of Fasthosts) are pretty cheap and provide DNS hosting with Registration. No love for Fasthosts but to be fair ukReg tends to be OK.

To help get clear what I think you want and at the risk of telling grandmothers how to suck eggs...:
The registrar is responsible for the domain eg renewal and managing the registration and the details for the registry. It is where you can set which DNS servers the domain will use.
The DNS service will then point to the services you want on the domain, eg tell what MX servers are to be used, which server is the www host etc.
This is the separation possible and I think it is what you are looking for.
zoneedit.com is good for reliable domain and DNS handling. You can use them for one or both.
1&1 get messy with splitting the services, they expect to handle as many services as they can as do most cheap domain reg companies.
Finally, ensure you know enough about DNS to not get into problems when setting it up. If in doubt, please ask someone, we are happy to advise even if it is for DNS and services elsewhere.

UK Reg do allow you to set it to any DNS you want and allow you to use their dns to point elsewhere.
Which ever provider you choose, check how simple the process is to change. Is it actually straight forward to move away from them. NB most have a big button that says 'transfer' but that usually relates to transferring to them not from them. The means of transfer away is often buried in small text under billing or accounts that has several warnings about loss of service and immediate cancellation of services etc.
For the uninitiated it is intimidating and even with some examples of very poor customer service, people get too nervous to move and keep paying the bills for service they don't get.
As I was once advised by a lawyer, in regard to terms in contracts, they equate to pragmatically getting the terms of the divorce settled before you marry! ;-)

Hi dunerider, there are many domain registrars..many of them good in their schemes and plans...in my view i prefer a registrar called XnYnZ Here they provide domain registration service in hassle-free method . You search other registrars and compare all the registrars and then decide accordingly...

Domain management and Domain Registration are separate services, in most cases however these services are offered together, i.e if you register/transfer a domain you will also get DNS management for free with the purchase.
It is much rarer to find a company offering free DNS services (without needing to transfer the domain to them) however if you have web hosting then this will usually come with your hosting and if like us your hosting allows you to host as many domains as you like then this is a good alternative.
