Hi

just wanted to confirm if a .co.uk or .com domain has any advantage compared to a .co domain etc, many people say yes others say no.

Im not interested in value wise, basically the domain I want in .co.uk and .com has gone and I wonder if buying it in .co or another is a waste of time, mainly with regards to seo?

Edit

Its availablein .org and .net aswell

Thanks

I would get the .net (as .org is intended for non-profits).

In my opinion, .co is just another fad like .me, .me.uk and the other domains. .co won't take off IMO as people will always try and add the m to the end.

I always stick to the top TLD's e.g. .net, .com, .co.uk and the country specific like .de, .fr etc.

have you tried adding a - in the domain to see if that's available?

Just a thought does it matter what way round the domain is such as:

I want generalplumbingsupplies.co.uk which isnt available but suppliesgeneralplumbing.co.uk is

obviously those 3 words are my keywords but does it matter what way round they go?

Good point about the .co could be mistaken for .com :)

I personally use .co.uk for UK and .com for worldwide sites.

Stick to the norm on this one.

.CO is for Columbia

Change your key phrase, to suit your domain, or us - to seperate... Your doamin is your domain, but u dont have to advertise the long domain on business cards, use something shorter and snapper for ur business cards, and signwritting if needs be

.co is the country code top-level domain assigned to the Republic of Colombia.
so unless you're targeting colombian search engine users... go for a domain that targets the country of your main focus, or otherwise go for a generic domain like .org or .net

yes, slightly, it does matter, because more people will search for plumbing supplies than supplies plumbing, and if you have an exact match in exact order then that's ideal. consider generalplumbing.com/supplies or plumbingsupplies101 or something like that... your 3 words together are a bit longwinded

.co is a TLD and seems to be ranking very well across the globe and is more like a .com, .net and .org etc. so people saying its for columbia are wrong as people in the know ( forums like DNFORUM ) will tell you the same.

IF you are just trading in the uk its always good to get a .co.uk for ranking, branding and also your saying to your customer your location is in the UK. also ( just for ranking .co.uk's ), I would also have my hosting in the uk ( opens a can of worms ).

Lastly: why dont you just buy them all? .co.uk .com.net .co .org .biz - if they are all avail then reg them al and have the other domains point to the .co.uk. This would also stop cybersqauting at a later daye

don't be silly... they're not wrong, you're just assuming they mean it's only for colombia when in fact some of them know what they're talking about and appreciate that it can also rank "almost" like a generic domain. but almost is not quite exact. this is a nuance that you won't spot unless you know google like the back of your hand, it's not just somethign to scout for in forums like DNFORUM
