Domain name - .uk.com

I was wondering the importance of domain name purchase. For example, if you wanted to run a website completely dedicated to Chelsea FC, obviously chelsea.co.uk and chelsea.com are taken, however if .uk.com was available would this be any good? And for future sale would this be valuable with high driven traffic?

Honestly, I don't think .uk.com is worth it. Can you name one large site that uses it?
Maybe not 'large' sites, but certainly lots of UK businesses use .uk.com and similar domains.

When .gb.com broke last year (the owners of the domain, from whom CentralNic license it, decided to try and regain control), we at one point were the registrar for some quite large companies - not necessarily with large web presences, but still utilising e-mail and so on.

I would try to get a .co.uk wherever possible - or even .ltd.uk - however, because firstly Nominet are an excellent registry to work with and secondly the recognition of .uk is obviously very high.

Nonsense. The only people who use such low ranking extensions are those who are too late to the party, are trying to ride the coat tails of the .com and .co.uk holders or are too stupid to think up a new name with an available .com and .co.uk address.

Some companies obviously fell for the "buy them all" scaremongering early in the life of the internet but I doubt anyone bothers nowadays. What with Google ruling searches, all you need really is the name of the firm; you do not even need to know the domain extension.

.com always wins. For the UK market you need .co.uk and .com otherwise you will lose visitors to traffic leakage.

.net and .org are decent and others have their uses but you never see them doing spectacularly well. Game had game.uk.com for years and look how far behind they were like behind Play and Amazon?

You would be better having chelseafans.com / .co.uk, chelseazone.com / .co.uk or something like that. Avoid the .uk.com

The guys at www.thedomains.com are very on the ball with sales reports of domain valuation.

.ltd.uk aren't work much and people don't expect to see these domains so are more likely not to click, or bounce off.

Pages rank, not extensions - perhaps you meant "underused subdomains" ?

Serious business understand the difference between brand awareness and brand protection - and correctly still register their domains in the main tlds

Your business needs a .com and a .co.uk and nothing else. If you have those concentrate on your business/project and forget about domain names. The rest are a waste of time/money.

Just my opinion :D

Also note (if you didn't know) - Football fan sites that want to display an upcoming fixture will be hounded by a company authorised by the Football authorities for a licence and money. They will threaten your site with closure through their highly paid lawyers.

I'd suggest choosing a company name that gives you the .com and .co.uk and get the Co name trademarked for added security.

If the Co name you want has both top domains already taken, then choose a different name. This judgement depends on how valuable the site will end up being, if its not that important eg: a basic blog or fan site, then a lesser domain will suffice.

Save the best domains for your Primary site, mainly as people know .com and .co.uk.
