Hi

I have couple domain names hosted atm but want to transfer them, trouble is firstly its been quite a while been hosted so have forgotten the process.
One of them has a website linked the other one does not its just an email address, I've been told by the current hoster that if I cancel the package all mail going in and out of the linked one will cease immediately which I dont want at least until I can do the actual transfer, the next problem is recommended hosting and what /who to avoid.

TIA

thanks @ctrlbrk, sorry not sure what you mean typology in this context, I think I mentioned one domain/email is linked to a site and one is not they are two different domain names not linked in business. I'm just wishing to move both without interruption or at least minimal interruption of service and at the other end what mistakes to avoid when doing so.

Re-reading your original post I'm actually not clear whether you just want to move your domain name somewhere else or you want to move the website too.

If the latter, is it an e-commerce website, is it based on any well known platforms such as Shopify, Drupal, WordPress, etc? How many site pages do you have? Do you know the size of your database (if applicable)?

Transferring a domain name to another registrar won't move your emails. You will still need hosting and someone to migrate the email accounts to the new server.

who are your domains registered with? who are they hosted with? and what email systems are you using?

if you have the necessary technical acumen, i recommend using a different service provider for each of these, as it means you can migrate one thing at a time without the others falling over, and it makes it harder for any company to hold you to ransom - easy to swap them for a different provider, without needing to change your whole setup. if you're transferring a domain to a new owner and don't want hosting or email services to go down, normally they won't, unless you stop paying for those services also. if you are not using your accounts for anything else, you could just hand over your passwords and call it a day. if you are using the accounts for other purposes, the easiest thing is often to make a new account with the same companies, because internal transfers and service migrations are usually a lot easier than external ones. then hand over the new accounts in tact.

I wouldn't normally do this, but dit it recently with someone who was using SiteGround

It was all in their previous devellopers account.
I would usually recommend they 1st get complete control of the domain by creating their own account at 123-reg or similar, then once they have control of the domain set up hosting.

Because they had a website and emails set up and didn't realyt know what to do it ended up far simpler for them to set up their own siteground account then just do an internal transfer.

All went flawlessly in literally minutes with no downtime and no worrying about altering settings or any transferring

Don't really know what Siteground are like yet, but seem OK so far.

yes it's always easier with internal transfers.

obviously if one has the time to plan it from the beginning they should first go with the most trusted registrar possible as a priority because that's the root of everything (unless regulators like nominet or icann step in and steal the domain due to legal pressure, which they have done to me once before)

This is an old post so you've probably sorted it by now but let me know if you still need help, I've transferred thousands of sites/emails over the years. Namecheap are a good host.

Sorry just spotted this after I'd posted my other message.
