i've chosen a domain i would like to purchase, but i'm unsure which company to choose. can anyone recommend one to me? or advise me who to avoid?

the ones i am considering are.

http://www.bt.com

http://www.ukreg.com

http://www.123-reg.co.uk

is there a best one? or are they all the same? :|

I also need about 5 email accounts to go with the domains. i'm happy with just normal pop3's, no need for exchange server or anything.

Thank you all in advance, :D

Unless you want to keep Domain Registration and hosting separate (some people do), then choose a hosting company that can also register the domain. Choose based on facilities/service/price that meets your requirements and budget. Bear in mind whether you can exit easily and quickly if your choice turns out to be carp.

You don't necessarily need Exchange in order to get better than POP3 mail facilities. Many hosts will be offering IMAP or webmail that might meet your business requirements better than POP3.

I have used 123-reg for domains as their co.uk prices are fair. Anything else is a lottery. So much so that as a reseller I am cheaper than they are on some TLDs and I still make a profit.

Carefully vet anyone that offers a free domain with hosting (not referring to anyone on these forums - just a general tip). In many cases the hosting is poor and when you want to leave they want a huge release fee for the domain as they have registered it to themselves and allow you to use for free while hosting with them.

Hope this helps

As has been already said, you don't need to keep the hosting with the same company providing the domain registration. However, there is one thing I'll advise you strongly to do - keep them separate. Hosting companies come and go and if yours ever goes bust or has a major service issue your website could end up being down for weeks/months unless you can upload the files elsewhere and access the name servers to change them.

i would only need about 500mb / 1GB of server space, the thing i would want most is email, several different [email protected]..... , i'm thinking of getting http://www.ukreg.com/website-email/web-hosting/ as they offer 10 advanced mail boxes and 500 standard, plus £105 worth of vouchers for advertising. and the price is pretty fair too. one thing i am curious about as i'm pretty new to making websites although i know the basics and am a very quick learner. if i was to get say 2GB of hosting, and i had 5 domains could i have 5 seperate sites on that 2GB or do the hosting companies limit the number of sites per subscribed hosting package, also i might be using a hosted ecommerce package with tiger but would want to have email with ukreg, is that possable? i imagine it is but just want clarification. thanks :)

We used to host with Fasthost (owners of UKreg) and this was a nightmare, support was dreadful. Do a good search and you will find many are not happy with Fasthost.

Fasthost will charge for each domain alias as that seems to be what you require. There are so many additional charges with Fasthost and was always difficult to keep track of when the anniversary of each charge was.

We have the resellers package so we are able to host the sites for our other companies. We moved to CSNewmedia only recently when our dedicated server provider let us down.

CSnewmedia offered to migrate the sites for us however we did it all in-house and it was without glitch.

networksolutions.com seems good too, a few large companies are with them from what i've gathered. the 1000 email boxes is attractive along with large bandwidth, what are the cons of hosting in the usa?

there's so many comapnies out there offering similar things, and some are confusing lol.

also whats the pro's and cons of linux vs windows servers?

Cannot state the pro's and con's as such but Linux tends to be more reliable. Which is best for you will depend on the scripting technology you will use. PHP works on both, some say Linux is best for PHP however ASP is windows only.

If you have a developer on board or in mind they should be able to advise you.

i know a online web shop ,it named

It's too long, it's too easily mistyped, with the hyphens it's utterly forgetful, and it's only ever going to get looked for by people who want exactly that brand-name.

So no, not a very good domain name IMHO.

what are the cons of hosting in the usa
    * more networks between you and the host for things to go wrong
    * not being included in "uk" based search engine results
    * the 100ms round-rip all data will have to make so slower for your visitors
    * limited capacity from a lot of ISPs through the transatlantic pipes - adding delays/congestion to you uploading/managing the site

to summarise just a few ...
