does this put you off?

hi there. just a quick question regarding a website we are building. Does it put you off if there's a "quick" intro vid on of the person who's company it is. Or does it install trust, genuine and is there a certain sincerity about it?

if we do this, it will appear on the home page, and appear as soon as you go on the site.

thanks in advance!

Well that depends on your definition of 'intro'.

If it gets in the way of where your visitor wants to go, then it may do more harm than good. However, if it's within the layout of the primary sales page, with an option to view it, then it can work wonders. Providing of course it's professional and isn't at all cringe-worthy.

Unless it's some kind of service where I will work directly with you then I basically have no interest in you. No offence! Certainly not on the front page. Let me see what I've come to see, have some info on 'about us' or 'what we can do for you' and let people click if they like.

I immediately leave websites if they start playing videos or music and there isn't a very clear way to turn it off. If I were browsing a few sites for the same thing I wouldn't even bother to hang around to look for the off switch.

If it's something you can choose to play, I'd still wonder why it was on the front page.

Hi, thank you for your reply, it's great and you have a big point. Incidentally I would be working with that person, however you rightly say that why does it have to be on the home page... etc. I think so far, including others who have replied, I might leave the video! I would still be interested to know other peoples views.

    Great reply!! thank you

It irritates me when a company talks about my needs as if they know them better than I do. For example I have looked at a lot of garden offices. I know why I want one I know what it would do for me. I want to know about the offices not about what someone else who does not know much about my life tells me it will do for me.

It is surprising how many sites try to tell me why I want an office, and some use video.

Then again there is one which uses video to tell me about their designs. I quite like that but it only plays if I click on it. It is good to have a video which in this case explains what a technical aspect delivers in usage terms.... means the doors are taller, means it will not rot for ?? years, .... means that the insulation is as good as your home... means it can be assembled quicker.. that sort of thing.

Remember the good old days of all flash sites and annoying "look how good my developers are at using flash" intros.

My advice would be to have a link to it and optional play. Not play by default. Not much annoys me more than landing on some page and getting blasted with noise of any type.

    there's some great feedback guys!

So, in your opinion... whats the most important aspect of a website? Is content more important than a "vid"?

    *** important ***
do you find that lots of website/companies, talk to much about themselves, rather than what they can do for you and do they make out that they know what you want. As someone on this thread as already pointed out that it annoys them when they think that the company knows what they want, when they dont!
