Does banner ads work?

It depends on your industry, target market and media. It definitely can work and you can easily measure results using analytics tools and taking note of your CPC/CPM/CPA. There are an increasing amount of people blocking ads which means there's a good chance you will always be missing out on a segment of your audience if you rely on banner advertisements alone. To overcome this you need to be combining different methods of marketing. For example you should be present and advertising on social media too.

When was the last time you clicked on a banner or any other type of advertisement? I'm sure there are some success stories but most will only ever generate a few clicks. I seem to recall reading some stats that showed a CTR of under 1%.

I agree the click through rates are low - 0.05-0.09% on ads I track, it doesn't make them worthless.

The best form of banner ads are re-marketing ads, as these create brand awareness targeted to users that have recently shown enough interested in your business to have landed on your site recently.

The best way to advertise online is in the Search Engine Results Pages and for the UK at least as the dominant search engine is Google the most effective money is spend on Adwords followed by organic SEO.

Take a look at this representation of a survey result asking 1500 marketeers what the top 3 ROI's were ( dated back in 2011) https://connect.goalscape.com/#/goal/6431B0BA-2751-7730-3AD7-07BA4B5ADD52/note/

This doesn't say that PPC will give ever one the best ROI but say that the most number of people had it in their top 3.

Careful what you read into it, but its a useful list.
