Having all sorts of problems at the moment with someone who doesn't know anything about domains and can't get in touch with the person controlling the Tag.
It got me wondering how many other small business owners are like this?

How do you get over the problem?
From my experience the small business owner has got someone to set it up for them in the past, and has either lost contact with, fallen out with, or just doesn't want to contact the person who set it up.

It should not be a problem unless the business owner has not taken ownership of the domain at the time of registration.

    .

How do you do it then if the domain is registered in the small business owners name, but the control of it is in someone elses hands?
I assume you can get Nominet to change the tag for .uk domains, but is it a long winded process and do they charge?

Nominet will change the IPS tag on behalf of the registrant if they are requested. The process is pretty much immediate and from memory cost about a tenner...

Why would you expect small business owners to know anything about it? If Bob is good at joinery and runs a small company with 10 people making joinery stuff, why would he know what a domain tag is?

Having full control basically means you can do what you want with it and change registrar, change name servers.

I have had a fair few clients who don't have full control and I have had to speak to nominet for them and one .com who just gave up on it as they didn't want the hassle.

I always request that new clients who are buying a domain name buy it themselves so it isn't linked to me at all and then everything is in their name from the off.
