I've been having a bit of a clear out.

Being an organised sort of chap, I've got reams of old bank statements, pay slips etc. from 10 - 15 years ago.

Any suggestions as to how to get rid of them? Can I just put them in paper recycling?

Yes of course you can if you don't mind a half a dozen cloned people like you called Jeff who have taken out loans and mortgages secured on your house, Better still leave them your debit credit card also.

Jeff i'll take this as your first post of the day and that you didn't drink enough coffee before typing it :D

Seriously, as been said Burn it or shred, and then burn that also. I bought one of those metal type dustbin incinerators for about £25, every so often i fill it up and burn it all to ash, thats the best way, and the safest way

As a Green Party Cllr I would of course suggest against burning. If you get a decent cross-cut shredder (rather than one that just cuts in ribbons) then it should be secure from all but the most determined people - especially if you mix in shreddings from non-sensitive material. Give it to a local school or animal charity as bedding for small animals.

Shredded paper can go straight on the compost heap, as long as it's mixed in well with other rotting material (peelings, etc.)

Hi Jeff,

Did you manage to sort this out? You could employ the services of a shredding company to shred nd recycle your information. Blatant plug but my business is www.theshreddingalliance.co.uk and if you let me know how much you have and how it is stored I can tell you what it would cost. To give you an idea up to 15 bags would be £40 plus VAT and this includes the certificate of destruction.

Regards,

Daniel

We have to dispose of quite literally hundreds of private quotations and customer details on a daily basis. We use a company called ShreadNeat, they take all of our paper in sealed, protected bags and use industrial on-site shredders to get it all minced up.

I spent a very contented Good Friday afternoon feeding all my old bank statements etc. into the Chimnea in the garden. Burning stuff was surprisingly therapeutic!! Might find a second wave of paper to get rid off!

However, this could soon all be a thing of the past as we now get all our bill etc. online. Less paperwork, but does have its own foreseen problems - for my CRB clearance you need to supply various documents (passport etc.) but also utility bills with your address on it. My water bill was the only paper bill I could find - proving who we are could get quite difficult in the future.
