What are peoples thoughts on using Directory listings for SEO?

I used to use them a lot but don't really bother now as I thought a lot of the websites were too spammy and often ended up being brought down.

What experiences do other people have?

Depends on the quality of the directory. There's still some good ones around that are worth submitting to. Well maintained, actually have an area of expertise.

But most of them are just spam directories that let any site in, those you need to stay clear off. Anything that is like "SEO links directory" etc is a big fat avoid.

Yeah I agree there Jonathan. I only use about 4 or 5 quality ones myself. I imagine there are more?

I'm not an expert so not sure how well it will help your SEO

However I can't see any harm in getting yourself listed, especially on free directories.

It may seem a little time consuming at first, but you only need to do it once.

There has been the odd occasion where I have seen the FreeIndex directory come up on the first page of Google.

SEO never dies. So, we cannot just brand some technique as bad or "not working". Said this, I would recommend to work on every white hat link building techniques, but should not give up reputation.

I mean, find out reputed websites in every niche, for example - find good and quality directories and probably directories which are relevant to your niche and post there.

I am working on Search engine optimazation, and i use local businesses sites for directory submmision. I had all the information of the business, including Address & Phone. Directory are still an effective strategy to build backlinks. We need to be careful while selecting directories.

Google want us to stop building spammy links to our own sites. SEO seems near impossible these days. Build a link and google probably dislike it. Don't build links and google won't index you.

Yeah its a total catch 22 these days for sure. The techniques I use these days are working. Just intrigued as to peoples thoughts on directory submissions in modern day SEO

The same message when the 1st Google penguin update was released still applies, keep your off-page optimisation looking natural without any blatant attempts to manipulate listings.

Google has never really said directory listings are bad news, just low quality ones, the amount you submit too and how you link to them etc..

I used to use directories all the time, however some of those sites were penalised by Google and i'm pretty sure it was due to a dodgy directory somewhere.

I think in 2014 as long as you choose your directories carefully, make sure they moderate links and are relevant to your niche or local area you should be fine and they might bring a little benefit.

Not all directories are bad but your main motive shouldn't be just getting a link but a referral traffic from that directory. After all, you want more customers and by getting referral traffic, you are increasing your chances to convert more people into customers.

Google is very critical about directories these days so be very careful if you do decide to list in a directory. DMOZ directory is a good start although it is not as good as it used to be couple of years ago.
