I work in the AV installation sector and use Brightsigns for a lot of digital signage applications. It does depend on your application and use-case though. Happy to answer any questions and make some recommendations.

As you say some are very expensive but depending upon your skillset in house and what your looking to do there is open source version out there which you can use too -

zoho sign as part of the zoho one subscription. Integrates fully with Zoho books so any estimates can be signed off by clients digital.

We have had really good success with Yodeck - really good interface, love anything that utilises a raspberry pi and solid as a rock.
