Digital marketing disciplines?

I came across this quote by WM:

If you're going to go into the world of digital marketing then I'd suggest you choose an area and become an expert in that particular area. Don't try to wear too many hats or get involved in too many projects. It will all end in tears.

There are many digital marketers who 'balls things up' because they try to pretend they know about everything and they don't. Almost every marketing agency covers the spectrum of marketing activities and that often ends in tears too.

Can the professional digital marketers here provide a list of what they consider the subcategories, disciplines, areas or whatever you want to call them, under digital marketing?

Thanks

Hi @ctrlbrk

This isn't comprehensive but gives you an idea of the task / roles involved. Some of these cross over but it's unlikely one person can do everything well.

  • Keyword Research
  • Technical SEO
  • On-page SEO
  • Off-page SEO
  • Content writing and ongoing optimisation
  • Account management & reporting (with client)

  • Keyword Research
  • Google Ads Set-up, Analysis and Management
  • Ad copy writing
  • Landing Page A/B Testing and Optimisation
  • Google Shopping Feed Optimisation
  • Account management & reporting (with client)

Email marketing
  • Email marketing strategy
  • Email content writing (Subject lines + body)
  • Email automation & funnel set-up
  • Customer segmentation
  • (If you become an expert in a particular platform then you can start to bring clients onto that platform and earn a monthly commission)

Social Media
  • SM Strategy
  • Visual content designer
  • Visual content creator (brand and lifestyle video / imagery)

I would say that at this level of specialisation analytics is embedded in the function, e.g. an SEO expert should be also an expert in measuring and reporting on their SEO tasks. Measuring the overall success of experts is a task for a (digital) marketing manager, if in business context.

That's a reasonable point but how many SEO 'experts' do you know who could give you a comprehensive briefing about the reporting capabilities of Google Analytics - especially the newest version - and how you should use those reports ?

None but I don't know any SEO experts :)

But if Google Analytics is the best tool to report on the SEO expert's activities and performance I would like them to use it for reporting both for their and my interests - theirs because if the reporting, and SEO analytics, is their responsibility they can better understand the results of their activities. This is why the analytics part should be embedded in the function, at least in my opinion.

We're slightly at cross-purposes here because analytics is more about the performance of the website than SEO activities - though there is of course some overlap.

Still don't understand the question

"The names of all the types, variants, categories of digital marketing"

Are you asking for a list of traffic sources used by digital marketers?
For context, check the quotation in my first post.

No.

The question has already been answered

No it hasn't because the question did not define any context

What are the categories of cars? Context: Speed? Manufacturer? Emissions? Year?

What are the categories of fish? Context: Region? Species? Colour? Size?

Generic questions that can be answered require context

What do you mean areas of digital marketing?

There are many different types of areas of digital marketing

Nobody has asked a specific question yet

Please go and learn the meaning of "classification"

What are the categories of traffic sources to a website? That's a specific question

Example answer format
  • Search traffic
    • Organic search
    • Paid search
  • Referral traffic
    • Links
    • Email
  • Social traffic
    • Organic social
    • Paid social
    • Mobile
    • Ads
  • Direct traffic
    • Type in
    • Bookmarks

Content writing should not be included in the SEO. I mean yes, SEO needs content but these are completely different stuff.

    Really interesting question and comments.

I often see 'marketing manager' roles being advertised, and within the job specification, it will say words along the lines of...

"We need a digital marketing manager who understands SEO, Adwords, Paid Facebook Ads, can write good web copy, understands branding and has a solid grasp of design'.

I chuckle to myself thinking 'I've run an agency for 10 years, and I wouldn't call myself an expert in all of those areas'.

The skillsets for a copywriter are of course very different to someone who is going to manage paid ads. Someone with an analytical approach to data, would be wrong placed to become an expert in copy, and would be better aligned with a role in paid ad management.

    From my experience the types of people who work in DM fall within;

    Data led
    Information led
    Design led

People normally fall into one of those categories. What they specialise in, will ideally be aligned with that. i.e

    Data Led
    Google Ads
    Social Ads
    Analytics Analysis
    etc

    Information Led
    Blogs
    Ad text
    Website copy
    etc

    Design Led
    Branding
    Ad visuals
    Web design
    etc etc

What people often fail to recognise, is that to undertake some tasks properly, you do need a crossover of multiple people who specialise in different things.

Even something as simple as a Facebook Ad, ideally you may have 3 people involved. A copywriter actually writing the Ad copy, with someone design led creating the graphics....all backed up by someone who is data driven setting the audiences, metrics and monitoring performance, making changes based on the analytics.

The biggest mistake in digital marketing is thinking one person can do everything. The second biggest mistake is thinking that it takes just one person to do anything properly.
