different color - sign up button

It's more psychological than that, for example green and red are one of the top conversion colours for buttons from testing, as green and red are associated with the Traffic Light colours, red means stop, green means go. Simple premise which is kind of indoctrinated from a very early age.
You should test your own colours though to see how much of a difference it makes, it's not about your opinions or others its about what works for your site and the hits will tell you that.

What do you think?

Marketing 101, if you want to attract someone's attention, make your call to action big and bold and obvious to even the thickest visitor.

This goes back to the colour question. Use a general colour scheme and make the call to action something different. Use the colour wizard on colorsontheweb to get the contrasting colours.
