Diabetes

God that must be so frustrating.

May I make a suggestion. Whether you are diabetic or pre-diabetic, a change of lifestyle may be a good thing anyway? Perhaps look at it like that until you can ask for a formal referral to a specialist, and perhaps participate in the programme anyway?

Yep - almost certainly. I've lost about 6lbs since this time last week. If I lose the same again I could drop below 15st for the first time since I was about 8 years old!

The dog isn't too keen on the new walking regime though.

I wouldn't be eating any fruit if I was diabetic. Just get some supplements for fiber, vitamins & minerals.

When I first joined the club 10 years ago the doctor told me that I was on a diet for the rest of my life but to be sensible about it and it wouldn't kill me to eat the occasional "bad" things but in moderation

    Not really a clever statement

The thing is whatever you eat do it in moderation and cut out artificial sugar if you can especially in high calorie man made foods, few people ever have a need for supplements living a normal life unless they have very restricted diets

Five days in to my new regimen and I've lost 5.5lbs already. Quite pleased and surprised at that to be honest.

Down to two slices of bread a day and no potatoes or rice or pasta.

Eating shedloads of eggs and a fair bit of chicken.

Tesco does a nice bag of mixed nuts for snacks.

Up to around 15 miles (total) of walking.

Sounds great. The only problem I had in your position was maintaining it. Easy for a year or two. Not so easy for 40 years! (in my case).

So i would try and find a regime that you are happy with for life!

My wife thinks i should relax and take the metformin but I am still managing without 6 years on.

I'm not saying its not cleaner than most people...but there is just a lot of sugar in that list when you say you don't take sugar. More than 10g of sugar in all those biscuits. Easily half a tonne of sugar in all the fruit.

My observation is that proper exercise like running munches sugar and carbs. So sedentary people need to avoid all carbs and sugar. If you run marathons then its not the same.

I saw an interesting interview with a Team Sky nutritionist. They have a base level of low carbs for rest days and then give carbs on training / race days in proportion to the effort.

If food has artificial sugar (sweeteners) in then it won't be a high calorie food. It makes no difference whether the sugar comes straight out a bag or from an apple, probably better off eating pure sugar than an apple actually seeing as it's lower fructose.
May not have a need for supplements but I find it much easier to take a multi vit and some fiber every day than worry about if I'm eating enough vegetables.

Thanks, but your observation isn't strictly true.

Proper exercise doesn't munch any particular food group. Proper exercise requires energy, and your body will use whatever is available.

Robert you cant expect the usual suspects on here to start running . They are already on borrowed time Imagine if everybody on here went for a six mile run today .
There would only be four of us left :):)

Got the results this morning from an HbA1c test I had done privately: 39mmol/mol i.e. normal.

Will keep on a revised diet though as I'd like to see if I can my weight to start with 14st something as opposed to the 16s and 15s I've been used to for too many years perhaps.

    That's great news. You're having a bit of a week, aren't you!

Will you be discussing this result with your GP?

I think the best thing you can do is eat a well balance daily food intake in smaller quantities than usual and over a long period reduce your weight to within the obese guidelines, once there it's a matter of choice if you wish to carry on

Myself i have gone from 16 stone to 14 stone over the last 4 months with a fast walk to get the paper and smaller meals and happy to continue on, hopefully my suger levels will be much better next month on my diabetes check and i can get off the bloody pills

I am very surprised that you cant maintain it over a life time Robert As an accountant you would have a very disciplined nature
I am a scatter brain but have the food intake of a monk :)
