I need a logo designed and was wondering who I should be contacting should it be graphic designers? I only want some wording in a nice font but don't know who I should be looking for

Hi.. go on freelancer.com and launch a Logo competition from as low as $30. You will receive several entried and you only pay for the best. Design is best done with the crowd than given it to just one person.

You should be aware to stay off logo competition sites and go with a proper logo designer / creative agency. However, on average the cost would start at £1.500 and up.

If all you want is some words in a fancy font you don't need a logo designer. You can do this with google fonts and a bit of CSS.

£1500 for a simple logo is barking.

Remember, logo is not everything, best thing to do, is make it yourself. Try your best and if you like it, ask some people, post it here, get some feedback. Simplicity is the key.

Kind of depends what you are looking for, a logo can be important as part of a branding process but if it's just for a home website/small company then yes, just knock one up yourself. Agreed that £1500 is barking mad, but there are plenty of companies willing to pay that sort of money. I know of one company that paid (sadly not to me) £89k for a website.
