Design Change...

Hello all..

Can anyone help me with the design of my website.. I don't think the current theme for the site, is how I want it, I have an image in my head of how I want it, but obviously, I can't design a website myself.. So, can anyone help me out at all..??

I have limited funds for upfront, however someone mentioned on this thread a while ago, about monthly payments for website designs, and this would be something I would be interested in...

Thanks in advance everyone!!! :)

Also, Gareth (Faevilangel), PM me back ;)

Jeff Knows

but obviously, I can't design a website myself.

Liar. You can, you just don't want to.

Get yourself a theme that sort of looks like what you want. Get the Firebug plugon for Firefox. Set yourself up a little test site and start playing. Couple of CSS reference websites and you are good to go.

Sure, you won't get a pro designed website and the code could be messy but you will learn a lot. Once you know how to make it look pretty much like you want it to look then hire a web developer to do it properly. Or spend the time to learn how it should be done properly.

Wordpress themeing is about as easy as web development can get. Pulling the data you want out of the database is just a matter of a few lines of code that are ALL well documented in the Wordpress Codex. Styling it comes down to learning how to manipulate HTML and CSS, which honestly.. if you can work a microwave or build an ikea table you can figure out HTML/CSS.

Use the firebug extension to pick apart bits of other websites you like. Set yourself what you think is an impossible challenge and don't stop until you figure out just how the hell it is you make a transparent heir achy menu using unordered lists.

It will give you a better understanding of what you want and will help you immensely in communicating that to a pro. Trust me, take two weeks and play like a child, you won't regret it.

Dude,

Lost count of the number of times help has been offered but everytime you jump in and go for the quick and cheap option.

It's not about what YOU think of the site, it's all about what your visitors think of the site.

Stop and do some planning, simply tweaking the layout isn't going to make things better. You need to anaylyse your visitors to see how they interact with tyhe site to determine which bits need updating.

The scroll box you can probably turn off in the dashboard and the greay background using the appearance editor. As Jeff says, go play.

PS: why a forum? Zero posts form anyone. If you aren't going to contribute why should anyone else.

I have been sensible actually.. this wasn't cheap, but it's wordpress, so it's not exactly like it's a bespoke website design.. So I am entitled to go with cheapest if it's a template, especially if it's a free template..

ANYWAY, I know it's about visitors, but at the moment, I don't see it as very professional with them scroll boxes, as the images get stretched.. Thanks for your comments however :)

There are some real cracking wordpress sites out there Chris, its about what you make it, and put onto/into your site.

Surely people visit a site for the content, looks are good, but on the whole so long as it works, and gives them what they are looking for, they will go away happy and hopefully return.

Just because wordpress is free doesn't mean the templates are free (or cheap). Some themes can cost hundreds of pounds. It goes back to planning and research, be clear about the type of content and then go looking for a theme that best suits the business. There's one I use which is perfect for you. And it's free. It's the one I was going to set up for you.

Yes I know some are not cheap, because I have seen a few which have a price.. but if I like it, I'll purchase it :)

Regarding the forum, I have recently set that up.. that is why ZERO posts..

I've been messing around with wordpress editor, and have saved the codes for my site from before (just incase).. I got rid of the boxes on the homepage, but I need a big promotional box created for the homepage..
