Data Cabling Business start-up

E

ES Cabling LTD

Hi everyone, Ive started to consider starting up a small 2-5 man data cabling business for small projects. Ive looked at building a future for my kids etc so would like some help or advice on achieving this. Im not intending to be a big company, just a small private business which prides it self on the quality of work and not mostly on the quantity, I need to know who or how i go about findind work like this - do i bid for it and how do i do this if this is the case? Where would be the best place to start. Any help would be great.

Thanks

I live in east anglia atm but if work is around the uk, i can work anywhere.

I'd see if you can get in with other local IT companies. Many companies will provide network infrastructure (i.e. servers, routers, and switches) but will not want to get involved in data cabling. I use an external company myself who I have known for many years and trust to do this sort of thing and I know many IT companies (and computer maintenance companies) who rely on such arrangements. It might be better to get in there rather than try to target specific end users.

Definitely agree with Lee above.Your best chance of getting repeat business is by referral from those providing other tech services. Physical cabling is often something that the LAN guys don't want to get involved with but need done before they can sell anything.

Small plea, if anyone says they're thinking of using VoIP in an installation bigger that say 3 PCs, please lay 2 Cat 5 cables per desk. It costs sod all incrementally, but double as an after thought ;-)

Coming from a web hosting perspective.

Have you setup your website and business email address yet?

I still remember how we helped setup a website for a client a few years ago. About four weeks after the site went live, he was on his way to a tennis game when his mobile rang. The lady on the phone said they had found his business via his website and asked to meet. Long story short that single website of a few hundred quid led to a three year print contract worth £150,000+ !

So moral of the story is get a website live as it only takes one visitor :)

Please feel free to contact me via this forum's Private Message tool, if you have any questions about domains, email and hosting etc.

    All the best,

This ^^ should be done regardless of VOIP when installing structured cabling - as it's then trivial to patch data, POTS, VOIP, KVM's or even video over Cat5e/6 and makes life sooo much simpler.
