Custom made laptop

Hi all,

I am interested in any recommendations for companies that make custom laptops.

I'm after a decent spec, any recommendations of companies will be appreciated.

I know of Dell obviously and have seen pcspecialist.co.uk and Alienware

I was going to post in the IT section but many people know about this topic :)

Why a 'custom' laptop ??

Is there a specific reason, or would you not just consider a decent branded one, spec'd as high as your budget would allow?

I use PCspecialist too, but not for laptops.

I'm looking for lightweight laptops, ideally under 1Kg. I do training and have to carry 6 of them around. Spec does not matter, only the weight. I have 6 now but I need to replace them.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers all,

Reason for custom was due to the fact that I want a decent spec and they tend to be cheaper.

I am after:

dual-core 2.4Ghz at least
1GB Ram minimum
15"/17" widescreen
Fairly light weight
Looks half decent and isn't a brick...

Can get a Dell for around £758 all in

I could build you a custom laptop. Trouble is, it wouldn't be cheaper than a high street brand. Custom laptops are few and far between and you'll find just buy searching for barebone laptops they aren't cheaper at all.

A customer of mine just bought an Advent from PC World, it has a dual core processor, 17" Screen, 2Gb RAM, 120Gb HDD, etc all for only £399

hope you don't mind but if you google Eclipse Computers you find a lot of complaints on their product reliability and customer service - much more than most other PC makers, its worth taking that into account

Comspec - That laptop you said is good, however it is
  • Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor T2330 (1.6 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, 1MB Cache)
Preferably I'm after dual core 2.4GHz

Cheers for the feedback bnorth - I totally agree, just that I hadn't checked their feedback yet. The company I do chose will be heavily vetted ;)

Stefan the one I showed you was a low-price machine. For the budget you have, you should easily get one much higher spec.

I would still stick to one of the bigger brand names, as that way they are likely to be a little more reliable. Laptops are notorious for breaking down, if our weekly repairs are anything to go by :)

Cheers, looks like I'll be heading down the Dell/Pcspecialist route. With them 2 companies being big enough and reliable enough, shouldn't be a problem. I'll probably post the spec on here when I come to buying.

With PCSPecialist note that higher end laptops use better motherboards so you can end up paying more for a computer with the same specs because of that, so only choose what is required.

PCSpecialist I think are supposed to be OK
there's a link here (PCPro vendor forum - sorry can't post link as newbie) that says they can take their time building and delivering a PC (desktop)

maybe worth asking if they have the necessary components in stock and how long they take to deliver .. not that I suppose their answer is legally binding

With a desktop depending on the time i think it takes them upto 2 weeks to make and deliver a desktop.
