Confused : Should I spend my money on cosmetic surgery or start a business ?

    Good Morning.

    I have been saving for the past year and have saved £25,000. For the past five years I have wanted to get some cosmetic procedures done and initially was saving towards that. I have the money for all 5 procedures I'd like and I'm torn between going ahead with it and starting my own business, these are two things I was saving towards but now I finally have the money I am torn between which to invest in.

    They are both things I really want and I'm simply having a lot of trouble deciding whether to invest my money in my own start up or use the money on cosmetic surgery. I am love with and have written a business plan and have owned two successful businesses in the past and my father owned a business so they asre both things I would really love to invest in I simply can't decide which one.

    If you were in my position or if I knew you personally what would I do invest my money and start my own business or spend it on cosmetic surgery ?

    Not necessarily.

    What kind of surgery are we talking about here, is it vital that you have it to give you confidence or are you just a perfectionist?

    I'd say that if you are determined to have the surgery sooner rather than later then go for it. Have it first.

    However, if your business plan allows for you to regain your initial stake within a few years then perhaps you could start the business first and bide your time. That way within a few years you will have had the surgery done AND you will have your business.

    Best of luck to you whatever you choose.

    If you really genuinely can't decide between boobs and business I'd say you should do neither. Put your money somewhere safe, look at the real reasons why you think you need to risk your life in order change your appearance and work on some self esteem!
    Don't waste £25 grand investing it in a business you clearly won't be committed too if you will resent it every time you look at yourself in the mirror.

    This is a hard question.

    Do you NEED this surgery ? My sister recently has a botched nose job and it's literally £4,000 down the drain and she has to pay another £4,000 for it to be fixed by someone else, what if the same happens to you ?

    I'd recommend you choose 1 or 2 procedures that you want done most and invest the rest in the business (start on a smaller scale) that was you have a bit of both.

    I'd also not recommend having 5 procedures done at once, just chose 1 or 2 you 100% need and don't go back.

    Having your business AND the surgery will be a better goal that just one of them.

    Cosmetic surgery - absolutely not.

    Business, well if you are not sure between the two options then it suggests that you are not 100% convinced about the business.

    Have you really thought through the business? These are really difficult times to launch a new business so you have to have a really solid proposition.
    Also, have you considered using barter to help with initial costs rather than spending all your cash. You need to keep some cash aside for the unexpected ....which will happen...painfully ....if there is no cash put aside.

    Is the surgery simply to enhance something you have already which is OK or to correct something that is seriously effecting your life and making living unbearable?

    If it is the former, if you have to choose between starting a business and having a bit spruce up I don't know why you are wasting our time. Get the surgery done and come back when you've got some real business questions.

    If it is the latter then it's a harder decision and one only you can make, but it didn't take you long to save up the first time......

    Personally I would invest in a business. However, as has already been pointed out if you are having difficulty choosing then odds on you are not ready to invest as you will not be fully commited.

    I have had corrective surgery in the past (a necessary procedure as vision was being compromised) and I appreciate the difference it can make to peoples self esteem. Again though if you are not sure you want to spend your money on this it suggests that your procedures are not really necessary.

    Maybe you should do neither.

    If you can save £25k in a year you must be doing something right, now. If you can think of spending it on cosmetic surgery I presume it is saved from income after tax, so in effect you have saved substantially more. Why do you need (another?) business? Or why do you need it for another business? With a savings record like that you could raise the money for a new business and spend the savings on having all those old tattoos removed and your whatevers made firmer and pointier.

    It's all going to be about quality of life, long and short term.
    How sure/well researched is the business plan that you'll get a good return.
    How much short term benefit will you get from the cosmetic surgery - for some this can make an amazing difference to quality of life, even for those that in reality don't really have 'problems'.

    The business could potentially be so successful that you could get the surgery several times over without having to save for long at all. Of course, it may not be that successful.

    Get the surgery, if the business idea is really good then maybe it can wait a bit longer. Assuming no one else stumbles upon it.
