Confused about 1and1 cancellation

Sorry i am writing another post question again but i thought i'd make this one more specific to my concerns now...

So basically to sum it up i got a domain name on 1and1 a few days ago (yet to use it to redirect to my blog). It gives 30 day trial and what i was lead to believe was privacy from contact details being displayed on whois.

So in the end i signed up for a .co.uk on 123reg with privacy with no issues there. But in the mean time wanted to cancel my .com or at least find a way to get my details off whois pronto!

Now im hearing alot of bad stuff about the cancellation process and im also a little confused on how it all works. I seemed to be able to go into my domain manager and cancel my contract and my domain after pressing a few buttons. In the cancellation area it now says contract is cancelled.

But after getting some emails back from 1and1 they informed me my details would still be on whois for another year until the contract ended. But i thought i had just cancelled my contract?

Here are some of the email's i got back:

"Thank you for contacting us.

As checked your account is already cancelled. However you can still access the control panel to update the contact details for the domain .com. You can use alternative contact details since there is no option to hide the contact details for a .com domain and we apologize for this. You may refer to the link below how to update the domain's contact details:

Note: Though you already cancel your account however the domain name .com will still be viewable in WHOIS until it reaches the expiration date 12-jun-2016. Thank you."

I then asked in another email if i could use their contact details instead of mine.

"Thank you for contacting us.

You could use the 1&1 information, however this is not advisable. We suggest you to use another information aside from 1&1. Thank you."

Then i asked why is this not advisable.

"Thank you for contacting us.

This is not advisable because the domain name is not owned with 1&1. There will be important notification about your domain name and you will not be able to receive it because you are using the 1&1 contact details."

Not sure if that's really going to cause any harm? I wont be using the domain name.

So basically, can anyone explain how i cancel completely and properly with this site. Im getting really confused, i thought there was a 30 day trial. Also if i cant do anything else for now, once the contract is over would i be billed for anything? I feel like i shouldn't be considering the 30 day trial but if the contract still has a year to go and for some reason its still going (even though it says cancelled on my cancellation section) will i be billed?

Thanks for any help in advance!

Another email reply...

"Thank you for contacting us.

Yes, you can transfer this domain name to another provider, however, since this is a newly registered domain, you still need to wait 60 days before you can do a domain transfer. Please see below:"

How is that still possible when ive cancelled everything? I dont get it!

Hi,

Basically you own the domain name (domain names aren't refundable) until 12/06/2016. If you plan not to use the domain name now then there is no harm in changing the details to 1&1. However they are correct in that you won't receive emails to ask you to confirm the registration etc.

Hope you get it sorted.

Hi nahosting, thanks for that info. So does that mean i could transfer the domain to somewhere else still? Also if i left it with them could i use their contact details but just keep an email of mine on there if im needing to be contacted? Wonder if that would be ok. Obviously if i transfer to somewhere else i will get privacy sorted if that's possible on .com do you know?

You cannot get privacy on a .com unless you pay a third party privacy company.

Transferring the domain to another registrar won't stop your name appearing in the whois database.

Thanks all. And fisicx i contacted 123-reg if i transferred to them i could pay for privacy for .com just like my .co.uk with them. So this is probably what i'll try to do at some point. For now ive changed the contact details to 1and1 but not sure how long that will take to update the whois system.

Won't work. If you want privacy on a .com you have to use a third party provider like the one Ian linked to.

Note also that ICANN will send you an email to confirm your identity. If the details don't match you could lose the domain.

If you want privacy you have to pay for it.

It will work. Many registrar's provide privacy through a 3rd party privacy provider. That is domain privacy. Technically with .uk domains it's WhoIs opt out - which still leaves your name, and is an entirely different thing. So domain privacy normally refers to the 3rd party privacy service, which many registrars and web hosts provide to their clients.

The point of transferring the domain away from 1&1 is if you wish to keep the domain, you can then transfer it to a provider that does provide privacy - and also isn't slated for poor customer service. As long as gemima wishes to keep the domain then extending the domain's expiry by a year isn't a problem.

    Hi Gemima,

Bear in mind that you will not be able to transfer the domain to another provider until the domain is at least 60 days old.

Any attempt to do this before then will fail.

When you can do it you will also need to obtain the domains EPP code from 1&1 and ask them to remove the domains transfer lock.

Once that is done take the EPP code to 123reg and start your transfer.

    Thanks

Correct, already advised on the 60 day point for ICANN domains in gemima's other thread.
I know she chose 123-Reg for the .co.uk but no reason to suggest taking the EPP code to them, especially given their .com registration fees.

How about internet.bs? Nicer company, much better pricing, and free privacy. Works out half the price of 123-Reg before you even look at the £4.99 + VAT 123-Reg charge for privacy.

Internet.bs: £6.89 inc privacy and VAT
123-Reg: £19.18 inc privacy and VAT

Staggering difference. 123-Reg are the 1&1 of domains, but still get mentioned so often sadly.

The question here is do you still want the .com domain or not? If the answer is a definite "NO" then what you can do is just update it to 1&1 contact details (including email address of the domain) and leave it be, that's it. You don't need to transfer it to another registrar and pay for domain transfer and then pay another amount just for activating whois privacy if you don't have any use for it anymore.

Do not worry about ICANN sending verification email or any domain renewal reminders because you don't want the domain anymore right?

So again, the question is do you still want the .com domain or not anymore? If not, then you can just leave it be with 1&1 contact details and focus on the domain you are currently using.

Well that question has already been answered. Gemima said she wanted to keep the domain, but currently has to wait to transfer it to another registrar because of the 60 day no transfer window for new ICANN domain registrations.

If you're intending to keep the domain (which is sensible - it's a good idea to have both the .co.uk and the .com), which Gemima indicated, then it makes sense to transfer it out. Also as I already pointed out there are plenty of providers that provide free or low cost domain privacy.

You don't need to go to a 3rd party. And 123-Reg are one of the worst options.

I had a similar experience with 1and1 which means I will never recommend them or use them ever again. I have been a customer of their's for 3 years and I decided to go for their highest dedicated server package which was about £300 per month.

The server right from the start would just not work and their support was absolutely disgusting. Their attitude was not helping either and they pass you from one person to another and the issue never gets resolved. I then hired a server admin to take a look at it and he said their default software setup was incompatible with the hardware they used.

I expected the server to be ready for me to use especially if I'm paying this amount of money. I'm technical myself so this was not a minor issue.

I decided to cancel and this started another battle where they almost admitted the problem is theirs but still would not cancel my contract. So I was left with a server I'm paying a hefty price for but cannot use.

So yes - their cancellation process is not easy!
